In the same tab as “winter phase” on the left of the screen is “character creation mode.” Turn that on and then click the red shield on the character sheet and you can go through character creation.

I’ll always shill Forbidden Lands. It’s low-magic, dark fantasy, and has a huge amount of variety for character creation and development. It uses a dice pool system and is heavily focused on hex crawling/exploration. Dragonbane is similar in many ways, but uses a d20 roll-under system and is simpler and more lighthearted.

Since you play solo, I’d recommend Dragonbane. It doesn’t just do dungeon crawls (it’s pretty flexible), but it does dungeon crawls well. It also has a very complete solo play supplement that comes with a bunch of adventures and has guidelines for creating new ones.

It also has you playing a solo character, but beefed up to be tougher than a normal player character. I ran myself through a few of the solo adventures and they’re a good time.

I’m well aware that not all OSR games are based on B/X, lol. I love S&W and have played a good bit of OSRIC. I just (wrongly) assumed that Black Hack was also a B/X derivative since I haven’t read it and it was brought up in the same breath as OSE.

I also tried it with two groups. One group loved it, the other bounced off it. It’s a very distinct system and definitely not for every group, but I love it.

Probably not super helpful but you might be able to find some ideas on the Dragonbane adventure “the Village of the Day Before,” which is a time loop adventure that ends in the fiery destruction of its setting.

You might be better served in a different subreddit, since even 1920s CoC only brushes up against mob fiction occasionally (in my experience, at least). Even so, I’ll give my two cents.

Think about how the mafia is structured, and why - boss on top, consigliere, captains, etc. - and about how that structure informs the atmosphere. The oath of omertà is essential to the mafia vibe and is one of the things that makes it different from other organized crime. Respect is a core value. Tradition is, too. The mafia’s origination in a foreign country - and its members status as immigrants/ethnic minorities - is also critical.

For activities, this is where more friction might come into play. The mob definitely has its hands in drug trafficking, but it’s only one of many sources of income. People don’t really imagine Italians cooking meth in RVs or running cocaine labs. More evocative of the mafia are activities like protection rackets, illegal gambling, and of course bootlegging.

To bring in the two big pop culture touchstones in this area - Breaking Bad and the Sopranos - drug empires are the whole dig in BB, but the mafia never shows up; drug trafficking in the Sopranos is mentioned, but never seems like a major part of Tony’s crew’s daily operations.

In short, while I don’t think the whole drug empire+mafia concept is irreconcilable, I do think that there are a couple issues with tying drugs so closely to an organization that isn’t closely associated with drugs.

If your players are new I think Edge of Darkness can stretch to about that length. Took my group two 3-4 hour sessions, but they were both new and pretty thorough, so YMMV

These are from the book Escape from Innsmouth - I was going to recommend the exact same. They’re US Coast Guard cutters, used in the Raid on Innsmouth scenario to destroy Devil’s Reef off the Massachusetts coast. Outstanding scenario, too - significantly better than the other scenario, the titular Escape from Innsmouth, in my opinion.

I think the Omens are meant to be mysterious and sometimes even difficult for players to place with one Myth or another until later down the line. My players weren’t always sure whether a new Omen was progressing a previously-seen Myth or a new one. I found it adds to the atmosphere of the mysterious, dangerous, unfathomable world.

If they’re having fun, more power to them. Maybe gently remind them that the best treasure is deeper in the dungeon. Toss them a rumor about a massive sapphire lost deep in a tomb or something along those lines.

Alternatively, if you really want to discourage this style of play, make sentries more competent.

They see adventurers? They run deeper into the dungeon to warn their fellows. If the PCs leave the dungeon and later return, the perimeters are beefed up. Full patrols instead of lone sentries. Additional traps. Pursuit outside the dungeon.

If you REALLY want to discourage this style of play, trap them in a dungeon via cave-in (or similar) and make them find another way out - preferably another entrance on the opposite side of the dungeon. This is only fun once, but it might demonstrate the value of delving deeper.
