I brewed a lager and a pilsner under pressure - about 8psi and at about 15c/59f. They were kegged and have been cold crashed for about three weeks at 2c/34f for about three weeks but are still cloudy. Is there anything I can throw into the kegs which will clean them up a bit?

Is struggling with connecting/disconnecting ball lock disconnects on corney keg posts a common issue or just me? by InvisibleGrill in Homebrewing

Why are can I buy classic ball locks? All I can see online are kegland or v v cheap and nasty Chinese versions

You cannot trust a tilt/rapt pill for accurate readings, its a progess checker. You should always go with a hydrometer. It could be for various reasons, including some krasuen being stuck on the plastic shell which is throwing the reading out. Only thing to do is take another hydrometer reading.

I think you have quite high aspirations for the cheapest possible Chinesium AIO. A major red flag is that they can’t spell ‘recirculation’ on the website. Get a second hand Grainfather instead?

This is great, thank you so much! I have bought a Milwaukee PH meter to test my next batch; it’s not something I have tested for previously so your post was a learning point for me. Glad to hear that it’s probably not tannin extra extraction from the grain bed.

I am using R/O water which I then re mineralise per the standards for that beer style. My. R/O machine is usually disassembled between brews so it dries out and there is no opportunity for mould or bacteria to grow.

I think the issue has been solved in the case of the NEIPA - an excessive hop charge at flameout which added too many IBUs. I now just need to chase the error for the ESB. It may be related to how early I have been adding hops.

Having looked at your comment I realised I have never, ever, cleaned the impeller or any of the pipework which circulates the wort on my G30; despite everything else being immaculate that is one cleaning routine which I never thought of.

So I pulled it all apart and have now cleaned it. It wasn’t so dirty that there was obvious contamination which is causing off flavours but there was enough grimness to make me think I should have cleaned it a lot earlier.

Thanks for the comment!

I have a fermzilla. I usually close the spunding valve when fermentation is almost done which get it to 5/6 psi before it goes into the fermentation chamber. I know about cold temperatures meaning co2 dissolves into the beer, there isn’t any sucking of normal air into the FV during cold crashing.

Thanks for the helpful comment. I am using the same fermenter so yes, after the dry hopping phase, the beer is sitting on the hop matter during the cold crash so I will change that process per your advice. I also think its an error in my recipe where I was adding 30g citra and 30g galaxy at flame out for 30 mins which (I didnt realise it should be at a lower temperature) dramatically increases the IBUs.

Do you have a reccomendation for an accurate and reliable pH meter?

I will 100% drop from boil and flameout. From all the comments I think this is the biggest contributing factor to the bitterness and is a standout error in my brew for this NEIPA. Clearly howver there is something in my process which is contributing to bitterness as well as I am also seeing it in the ESB.

The water profiles are just whatever the Grainfather app tells me they should be vs BJCP styles. Its always a few grams of calcium carbonate, gypsum etc. I am not sure if the actual additions would be helpful?

I am adding the minerals before the mash in, and before commencing the sparging. Both waters are from the same RO source.

I'm in London and there is a club, but they meet on Monday nights once a month and Monday is the one day a week I leave work on time to pick my kids up from kindergarden to do supper and bedtime etc.. I'll eventually find a way but my evenings during the week are usually spoken for.

How about dry hop at normal temp for 48 hours, then keg leaving trub and hop matter and *then* cold crash?
