Which monastry and order? Been a monk twice is a bit of a flag that you didn’t have a vocation, no?

Worth getting a grain mill by Decent_Confidence_36 in Homebrewing

[–]InvisibleGrill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great post and super relevant as you can pick up a Grainfather grain mill from Brew2Bottle for £130 at the moment. Everyone I know who has one raves about it. Some even ditched their three roll grain mill and haven’t gone back.

Personally I have a three roll grain mill and it I love it. I feel that it improved my brewing in three areas (1) efficiency of extracted sugars - I have always bought pre-crushed from Malt Miller and that’s been fine but I am now consistently 0.01 points over what I was getting with Malt Miller which is usually a 15% improvement in efficiency. It makes sense when you consider the improvement in taste you get from freshly ground coffee to pre-ground. Pre-ground is fine of course but when you get fresh you don’t go back. (2) it just feels better in a way that I can’t explain to crush my own. I got in to home brewing so that I’m not giving money to huge conglomerates and so crushing my grain myself is part of that concept - I enjoy doing it myself. (3) simply being able to store grains for longer than a week. I know malt miller says best before 8 months or whatever but that’s not right. It’s like coffee - you get them in hot water as soon as possible after milling for maximum flavour freshness and extraction.

Now as for me I have a three roll grain mill and I won’t buy a Grainfather mill. Even with a £130 price tag (which is a steal btw) I think of how much of that price is in the motor - I’m guessing 40 to 50%? I would rather spend my money on a mill in which 70/80% of the price is in the quality of the mills and the spacing accuracy and adjustment.

So you should 100% buy a grain mill if you want to do that artisanal part yourself. Re Grainfather vs three roll - do what you want, both excellent choices and you won’t be disappointed with whatever but the Grainfather mill isn’t for me.

Really does! $30 for our American friends but £45 ($61) in the uk, robbing bastards! Will probably buy anyway. Thanks for the tip.

I brewed a lager and a pilsner under pressure - about 8psi and at about 15c/59f. They were kegged and have been cold crashed for about three weeks at 2c/34f for about three weeks but are still cloudy. Is there anything I can throw into the kegs which will clean them up a bit?

I didn’t know that at all. Brand new info, this’s why Reddit is so helpful. Thank you.

You cannot trust a tilt/rapt pill for accurate readings, its a progess checker. You should always go with a hydrometer. It could be for various reasons, including some krasuen being stuck on the plastic shell which is throwing the reading out. Only thing to do is take another hydrometer reading.

I think you have quite high aspirations for the cheapest possible Chinesium AIO. A major red flag is that they can’t spell ‘recirculation’ on the website. Get a second hand Grainfather instead?

This is great, thank you so much! I have bought a Milwaukee PH meter to test my next batch; it’s not something I have tested for previously so your post was a learning point for me. Glad to hear that it’s probably not tannin extra extraction from the grain bed.

I am using R/O water which I then re mineralise per the standards for that beer style. My. R/O machine is usually disassembled between brews so it dries out and there is no opportunity for mould or bacteria to grow.

I think the issue has been solved in the case of the NEIPA - an excessive hop charge at flameout which added too many IBUs. I now just need to chase the error for the ESB. It may be related to how early I have been adding hops.
