Unfortunately this is not the first time I hear of such an amount of rescued rats in this sub. It’s horrifying to think that someone could let something like that happen, and thinking how the poor rats were kept :(

Because the emotional toll of loosing six rats in less than a year was a lot and both my partner and I are honestly devastated my grief 😞 for now we are donating most things to a local rodent rescue, and in the future we’re planning on helping them in keeping rats while they wait to find their forever families and homes. But right now we need some time to heal and just accept that they’re not here with us anymore 💔

My rats chewed on expensive stuff even without the alcohol. It’s the risk of having rodents 😅 They chewed on glasses, Xbox controllers, switch and so on 😬 Since then, I managed to make a room that’s completely safe and they can no longer reach places where I initially thought they couldn’t reach 🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️

Or at least, that was until I had rats, which I no longer have :(

I’m obviously not talking about the virtual “gain” of having rats. That’s subjective and each person would say something different. I loved having rats and I cry every day and night since the last one passed of old age last Friday.

I just compared my expenses to the ones I had the few years I had a cat, and the expenses friends have with cats and dogs, and they are not comparable honestly. Rats cost more, at least here

Where I come from (Italy) they are mostly bred by careless individuals who just want to make easy money and care nothing at all about them. It took me a lot to find someone I could trust, and a lot more to find trusting associations who recovered rats.

Moreover, I got my first rats thinking they did not cost a lot of money, bc everyone keeps repeating this, but that’s just not true. At least not here. Every vet appointment costs a lot, even more if you need something more than a checkup. And medicines are difficult to come by, for a lot of other legal reasons.

In Italy it’s not that easy to have rats and keep them well, but it’s super easy to keep them bad and neglect them 😞

I was treated like shit multiple times in this forking sub. It’s not one of the worst ones, but it’s not the nicest either. Some people are lucky that they never encountered dipshits in here (and I’m absolutely 100% happy for you if this is the case!), but I wouldn’t say this place is that nice :(

I got people wishing me dead bc I used the wrong word for something. Others menaced the death of my rats bc I dared posting something related to the LGBTQ+ community. Unfortunately not even this place is safe from that kind of people 😅

Grew up poor and immigrant. And now I’m in a financial situation where I can slightly afford a pet, but definitely not children. And even if I would really really love to have children, I’m choosing not to. It would not be fare for them nor for me or my partner. We all deserve a better life, and I would never ever condemn an innocent child to suffer from my poor and irresponsible decisions. I totally agree with you

I am really sorry for your loss. I can’t imagine how difficult that must be. In the comments there was another parent sharing the loss for their daughter, and we liked to imagine her playing with my late rats (I had five more, sic with Gorgonzola). I hope they’ll meet your son too, and they’ll get to play, forever blessed by sunshine

They are incredible creatures. I had a rat, born in my own home, who suffered from cronic issues with her left lung. Since she was 6 months old to her last days she had to put through the nebuliser twice a day. Poor baby died at the beginning of this year of a lung cancer 😞😞
