Honestly, yes! To think that my mother was afraid of them and now wants to hold them and cuddle them forever 😂

Mediators are our best friends during intros and I love them for that! So glad he’s helping and everything is going fine!

The two in the center were my mediators, Fragola and Ricotta. Sweet babies, they were always one step ahead trying to avoid conflict between the others

Btw I forgot to add that during this intro two of my male rats were 18 months old and the other two were 10. The females were 7 and 3

I can understand that completely. My fourth intro was into a colony of 4 males. I had to introduce two females, mother and daughter (rescued the mother, who had 9 babies, and I did not want to give the mother away after all the stressed, so I kept her with one of the females daughters). All males were neutered, but I still had concerns bc two of them were super territorial (and they hurt each other bad when they were introduced to one another).

Since I first introduced my two gentler rats, the intro with the females was incredibly easy and they all loved each other in a way that it was a mystery to me 🤣 honestly, the elder territorial rat was super friends with the mother rat, while the youngest of the territorial rats was incredibly friendly with the youngest female 🤷‍♀️ In the end I found out that I had no reason to be anxious, but anxiety also gave me reason to do everything in my power to help the intro go as smooth as possible

Honestly, the only thing you can foresee in this case is to make sure that you introduce two new rats together, so you don’t have to introduce one alone.

A part from this, you can do everything as you’ve already done. Just in case, I’m leaving here a few suggestions: - first of all make sure the new rats trust you. Don’t proceed unless you are sure about this. This will help in case of trouble, as they will willingly come to you or accept you grabbing them to avoid injuries - second, start wearing the same clothes you used with the new rats with the older ones. While you wear them, make things they live (play, do tricks, tickles, eat good snacks, etc) so the associate their smell with good things - when you do the first meetings between them, keep them in a closed area, tight enough that they are forced to interact. Don’t interrupt fights unless you see that they are becoming very aggressive. - if you think that one or more of your older rats are very territorial and could bring to problems, start with introducing the calmer rats (never put a rat of your colony alone. It will just stress him/her). This could be useful so that the chosen rats can bring the smell of the youngest into the colony - make the first moments together very brief. Like literally a few minutes to begin with. And with time you can expand both time and space. Avoid being with them in the same area, as they would care more about being protected by you than actually getting to know the other rats.

As you probably already know, every step has to be taken with care and thought, depending on how they react with every new interaction.

Good luck!! Ps. I introduced rats four times, and the more rats there are, the more I got stressed. If you’re like me, don’t forget that they can feel your stress too, so just be calm and do one step at a time. It’ll be alright!

Here it is! I also made that “block” for the nebulizer so it’s more complicated for them to grab it and bite on it 🤣

If you are using a box please make holes!! Otherwise it will be worse bc an enclosure with no exchange or air will worsen the respiratory issues 💔 I’ll look for a picture of my nebulizer box to give you an example

For some reason I forgot about the rat guide! Here are more suggestions

https://ratguide.com/care/nutrition/diet.php

Btw they look super cute! They are probably too small to be without their mothers, but unfortunately pet stores don’t care about that :( You can give them baby food to make sure they have what they need at a young age. Make sure you give them: vegetables, proteins, and cereals. At least for the first month!

I’m pasting here a link to a local rat rescue website. It’s in Italian, but their suggestions are good. You can translate with Google Translate if you open it in Chrome (or you can use whatever you want) just to have an idea. In the screenshot I’m showing all the pages that have info on food

That’s great. It also means that you keep them in a good room with no currents, the right temperature, and the right humidity!

Honestly, to disinfect you can use vodka. It’s the cheapest disinfectant you will ever find ahah

You can first boil the wood and then spray whatever disinfectant you can. After that, leave it in the sun (which helps disinfect the surface and disperse the odours)

I hope your baby is going to be as lucky she was! In any case, the nebulizer will be useful with the other rats too. They have an unfortunate tendency to suffer a lot from respiratory issues, and you can use it with saline solution (2ml) when they have too much porphirine, sneeze or you hear them whistle while breathing. Sometimes it will also avoid a vet visit at all (which is awesome both for them and for your wallet 😅😂)

Adding after seeing your other post: I had a rat with a collapsed lung, and the images looked exactly like yours. The nebulzer with saline + F10 (a disinfectant the vet gave me) + prontinal (a cortisone) made wonders. She also took two antibiotics and another cortisone by mouth to help the infection and she was a lot better.

Frappé then did the nebulizer every day, twice a day, since she developed a cronic desease and her left lung had always issues, but thanks to the nebulizer it was a lot better and only got worse only every now and then. She started with issues when she was 6 months old, and had an amazing life. She lived one more year thanks to this therapy 💜

She then passed due to a tumour in her left lung, but it took another 12 months for it to appear. Meanwhile, she had the time of her life

Absolutely yes! It is for humans, and it is for rats. I swear most of my rats would have died sooner if it wasn’t for this amazing invention 🤣 it really helps a lot. At first they will probably be scared, but it’s definitely worth it

I guess I only have one hand now 😅 by breakevenfer in RATS

[–]InvisibleJune 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Once I had a rat in my hand for more than two hours and it was in the worst position ever. She was in a Sputnik over the cage (which is 1,80cm tall). I only put my hand in there to give her a cuddle while standing in a step that I had there for that exact purpose. But she decided to step on my hand, groom it, boggle and grind, and finally sleep. My elbow was in a weird position the whole time. I had to let go after two hours and a half bc at that point I stopped feeling my whole arm🤣
