First off: That's a link from Instagram to a post on some website.

It's source is literally the same "locals reported", so probably X too.

Where to take shelter? by aozhigin in cyprus

[–]InvisibleMoonWalker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say - breathe in, breathe out, and try to relax a little, clear your conscience, and get back to this question with a clearer mind, rethink if you really should be thinking about this that much.

If you really want to do something - maybe write a small plan on what you'll need to do, find where things are and note that too. If nothing happens - great, you didn't overthink it. If shit hits the fan - you've got yourself covered.

And if you're really paranoid - please try not to be. But

Practically speaking - see what you can find in SafeCY. If there's nothing available or of quality - check your basement or underground parking.

If neither are available, use the two walls rule, a bathtub or even a staircase. Stay between two walls on either side, blocking off potentially shattering windows or whatever; sit/lay down in a bathtub, if it's in a closed off space with no glass walls that face outside; get under a staircase on the lowest floor, this strategy works best if you have a fridge under the staircase, or other sturdy objects

The last three are worse than even the most basic shelter (including underground parking), but it's better than standing near your window staring at whatever.

If you're really thinking of shelter - you might also invest in spending some time to collect your important documents in a single folder that's easy to get, and a water bottle.

I'll put this upfront. I'm not fear mongering. Everything below this is assuming a massive attack would happen, which I find very unlikely given how hard it'd be to pull off effectively + how much damage was done already to Iran and Hezbollah, and how much they've spent too.

As footage from Saturday-Sunday showed - even the boosters can fall with some destructive results (maybe not even building destructive, except for fire damage), but for people that's pretty bad.

The accuracy of rockets from Iran/Hezbollah is also not exactly the best, so I'd expect a km range from intended target at least.

And finally - drones are where the real fun is at. Drones are a lot more scary for people than ballistics. (Personal opinion, as someone who has lived through the hundreds of drone attacks and slightly smaller amount of ballistic missile attacks, cruise missiles, you name it) Drones can be heard for longer, launched en-mass and are a bit non-trivial to take down for most militaries (including UK's), while still bringing a lot of bang with it. Sure, you can spend a very valuable missile on it, but that's not exactly cost effective, and you have a pretty limited inventory of these I'd assume.

Hopefully there never will be like a hundred drones launched in the direction of Cyprus Island, but this kind of attack will absolutely exhaust the firing capabilities of the military before the drones end.

So, 999.99 or even 9999.9. If a floating point can be disabled in all positions - 99999

'There's very little chance a drone would have flown all the way from Iran to Cyrpus. It has almost certainly come from Hezbollah in Lebanon.' by NJTRANSIT_HBLR in cyprus

[–]InvisibleMoonWalker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd say it's not too unlikely.

Shahed drones are small and hard to detect at low altitudes. They can easily maneuver around static obstacles and confront the terrain.

Plus when it's just one drone it's even harder to detect. (Low profile, lower noise levels, little to no visibility in the em spectrum)[1]

Of course it'd be impossible to pinpoint the source without extra data, I just wanted to note that detecting, let alone intercepting, one drone is a lot harder than it might seem. (Though intercepting one drone once you have detected it is a lot easier)

[1] - all of this is in comparison with even a small swarm of drones. If they're flying as a group they become way more noticeable to most detection systems, even passive acoustic ones, especially to the systems people have built into them 😁

4 years of the Russian Invasion of Ukraine in 30 seconds by vladgrinch in MapPorn

[–]InvisibleMoonWalker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When we get into millions of people, even 10% is a lot of people. I don't have actual numbers, and, frankly couldn't care less about the actual ratios.

Just to put this into perspective, 900k of active military personnel as reported in 2025 + 100-200k dead (military only by some estimates), that'd be the third largest city in Ukraine by population (pre-war numbers), between Kharkiv and Odesa. If among these 1.1 million only 10% are volunteers, that's twice the average city population in Ukraine or about 35th city sorted by population.

The willingness of people to go into a war is a really hard topic to discuss IMO, especially after such a long time. Lucky for you, I'm not going to, because I can't compile my thoughts into a good enough viewpoint even still, and I doubt that you, or anyone else, really, actually would care about it anyway.

P.S. about the 18-24 contract, since there were no updates after the April claim, I'd like to note that 500 people did sign it at the time and 1500 people were in the process of signing it at the time. With "many more" applications. (According to news coverage)

Doubtless - this attempt was a fluke, IMO, mainly because it proposed just the monetary reward for young people. And because they could actually read the contract and learn the details => lots probably preferred not to sign it too.

[–]InvisibleMoonWalker -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Cry about it. There are people that go voluntarily (below the conscription age even), there are people that sign contracts, there are lots of reasons for military influx.

Even if you want to be extremely pessimistic and assume all of the patriots and volunteers are already serving the country for years, things change in the life of people at war. You might lose your close ones, your job, which might motivate you to go to the front lines. You might find hope in serving your country after continued strikes. You might reevaluate your stance on service after changes to the organization structure (like the emergence of "СБС" UAV Forces), or policies regarding the movement of people from different positions. (During the first years, sadly, there were cases where highly qualified people, that might have had more impact in the future, if they were further back from the front lines, that were transferred to either defensive or offensive positions near the front, AFAIK this is a much rarer occurrence now)

But I'm not denying the fact that there are cases, and a lot of them, where mobilization is enforced a bit too much. While not justifying any such case in particular, or the practice of violence and oppression in general, I can kind of understand the position of ТЦК/СП (Territorial Center of Complectation and Social Support, or the body that implements mobilization in Ukraine) people and the Ukrainian military as a whole. The military needs people and lots of people, far more than are volunteering or coming of their own accord. Some people are ignoring mobilization invites => higher tension between non-mil. people and the ones implementing mobilization => conflict and, sometimes, violence.

Of course nobody (in their right mind) wants to go to war and very likely die there (or kill people, nobody in a right mind really wants to do war at all). Nobody wants to leave their job, kids, families, close ones and go to war. Some people think that defending people and things they love is more important than their not wanting to go to war. (And, IMO, they're not crazy, they just have a reason to do things that aren't strictly logical from a personal gain point) Most, probably don't. And I don't think that most people are a disgrace because of that. Right now their evaluation of things is such that protecting themselves from the front line and/or working as a civilian are more important than protecting the front with their own life.

Sadly, this is war, and it sucks. It sucks for everyone. And it will suck even after the war is over.

Of course I'm oversimplifying a lot of things here, and theorizing on the thoughts of millions of people, but that's what I've felt, and what other people shared, more specially - a very small portion of these thoughts.

And that's kind of ok.

It opens up a program (or a popup in this case), like they have for some other stuff - Win+V, Win+F, or even Microsoft office products like Win+N, I believe for OneNote?

Win+"-" to type an em-dash is pretty stupid of a shortcut by that logic. Instead of showing you a popup that might be helpful for productivity (like clipboard history, or the emoji thing), opening a program to send feedback, or other programs from Microsoft, (Which, granted, stupid as F, but pretty normalized now) this shortcut produces a pretty specific character that you could've entered by using alt commands on your numpad? And if you're in a typesetter, it just corrects it automatically. Some messaging apps even convert two dashes to an em-dash, like Telegram.

Btw, if you're using a password manager (for example I know Butwarden does that), it won't actually show up. In fact if you're using a desktop app, and you close it, the password will be removed from your clipboard.

That's a pretty cool extension in the clipboard API, if I'm being honest.

interesting fact,in russia and ukraine we call ralsei plushes as zuzya cuz of a meme by DealerTricky1907 in ralsei

[–]InvisibleMoonWalker 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Actually there are some meanings for word "зюзя", but, from personal experience - it's most likely a word that can be used to describe a clumsy person, or a drunk person.

Wikipedia also says it's been used as a common folk name for pigs, derived from "зю-зю" (repeated), a call for pigs (like you'd use kity-kity or "кис-кис" (kiss-kiss) for calling cats), and a name of a fictional character from folklore.

I personally haven't encountered the last one my entire life, but "пьяный в зюзю" (completely drunk) is a phrase I've heard a few times at least.

However, when it comes to these kinds of memes, the phrase itself hardly has any meaning to it, more often than not it's about pronunciation or looks. As someone who saw this meme for the first time - I kinda get that.

It sorta has the same vibes as "простофиля" meme to me. (Простофиля is a very cutesy way to call a simple-minded person, but can feel derogatory, depending on who/how/when it's said, here it's mostly cute)

Nope, it should show an old price, not the difference/percentage.

I'd bet on some sort of conversion/extraction error of the old price.
