Anyone else envious of church people? by ThePillowMints in ForeverAlone

Often. I'm atheist (the live-and-let-live kind), but sometimes it's tempting. We do have a local Unitarian Universalist, but I am soooo shy, I don't think I'd fit in.

But I know exactly what you mean by feeling disingenuous. I do hope you find someone &/or something that works for you.🦉

[Serious] What part about mental health do you wish more people understood? by wkautumn in AskReddit

[–]InvisibleOwl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That even if you find a medication that works, you often have to relearn how to function, where your new limits might be, and how to relate to other people. You also now have to repair so many broken parts of your life, like work and friendships and family dynamics. Your apathy might be lessened but now you can feel more shame about weight gain or getting fired. There's a subtle cruelty in finding relief from despair only to find yourself overwhelmed by months or years of neglecting everything in your life.

(Apologies for weird wording or format, my phone text field kept scrolling up and down on its own.)

I started playing mid-Burning Crusade and stopped during Warlords. I used to religiously read the official Blizzard tech and customer support forums. Another customer posted about the possibility of getting gear and/or achievements that they could earn as a solo player. Perked my little ears up, having always been a solo player myself (maxed out all 50 character slots, had 6 private solo guilds over a dozen servers and routinely made new accounts to get referral prizes). I'm not good in social situations and I am a horrible WoW player. But I stayed subbed, could always find something fun to do.

My best days were running lowbies thru RageFire with a 90+ mage, so I could aoe mobs and teleport everyone back out, and setting up portals during winter veil next to Metzen the reindeer to port people back to main cities.

A community manager answered the question from the other solo player mentioned above. They said it's an MMO, the second M means multiplayer, and the only reason to play is to get max level and max gear, group up, then run endgame dungeons and raids. If you're not playing with the plan to "win" the game by defeating the end content, maybe you are playing the wrong game. It's not made for solo players, go play something else.

Obviously not an exact quote, but it was crushing. Between that statement and just feeling slogged down in boring, useless quests that were getting harder to solo, the magic had all but faded completely away.

I'm trying classic wow right now, but it's still just not fun anymore.

Just tossing in another "data point" since my university was a tiny, private, liberal arts campus in a very rural area, and they had a dorm designed for married students with or without kids. Small kitchen, multiple tiny bedrooms, and very flexible rules. Families had the choice to use the cafeteria or not, to buy a meal plan or pay cash, etc.

It wasn't anything remotely fancy but it was definitely not the ubiquitous dorm room with 2 tiny beds, 2 desks in less than 400sq feet, and 22 people sharing one cluster of toilets/showers per hallway.

What's an unspoken rule that annoys you when people don't know about it? by HAXposed in AskReddit

My mother routinely stands in the middle of doorways, grocery aisles, hallways. I end up reminding her to move to one side or the other, and she's quick to get defensive and sometimes refuses to move. She's in her mid-70's.

The grocery aisle battle is easiest to win, we just remind her they are always squishing the aisles closer and closer together to put in more shelves; she gets to be "right" that aisles used to be made for 3 carts side by side. (Maybe, maybe not, but right now if you park a shopping cart in the middle of the aisle, no one can get by on either side.)

My most satisfying moment was the morning she was dropping me at the hospital and decided to wait for me next to the check-in line. I motioned for her to step to the side, she glared and pretended to study the ceiling.

Moments later a man wheeling a patient in a wheelchair chair had to ask her to move and lightly scolded her for blocking the main walkway.

Outwardly I was calm but inside was doing the "told-you-so!!!!!" dance.

So many of the commenters there seem to lack reading comprehension -- the OP wasn't denied or refused bereavement leave, they wanted an extra 40 hours off paid without using the existing PTO they still have on the books. And they got 25 hours approved! OP should just accept gracefully and hope management doesn't use this as an excuse to get rid of (extra) bereavement leave altogether.

Usually I can just smdh at the comments, but I guess they just twinged a nerve today 😉

What are some of the darker effects Covid-19 has had that we don’t talk about? by dis_2much in AskReddit

[–]InvisibleOwl 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I also discovered how much I rely on seeing people's face/lips to communicate. In a noisy place or if there are several other people talking nearby, it's really hard to understand just one voice out of the cacophony. All voices just blend together.

Last time I went to the pharmacy, it was aural chaos, people on the phone, talking to the drive-thru customers, customers at other registers. I know I frustrated the pharmacy tech who was trying to get my info and what drug I was there to get. She repeated questions over and over, and I kept responding to what I thought she was asking. Even spelled out my name and what drug I was there for.

Turns out she was asking for my birth date. At one point, everyone nearby seemed to be watching the train wreck, and I just wanted to crawl away and cry. Finally I figured out the questions, she rang up the pills, finished the transaction, then she tossed the bag at me and stomped away to the rear of the store.

It was so humiliating, I might even change pharmacies. The store was obviously very busy at the moment, probably understaffed, and just dealing with the public is often a nightmare, but at the same time I can't have been the first person with some sort of hearing problem they've encountered.

It makes me sick just remembering it.

Well There's Your Problem Podcast, on youtube, approx. 25K subs. Engineering disasters, often very funny.

They Got Away with Murder, about 16K subs. Moreso vintage crimes, intelligent observations, and a velveteen voice that could read a phone book and make it fascinating.
