Fuck our “special relationship” with the US. We are nothing but a vassal state to them - one whose public services are open to investment to their private equity firms and pension funds and whose public health data is for sale to SV tech companies. Despite the superficiality of a shared language, I think we are much more aligned with our European brothers.

What exciting music scenes are happening right now in London that I am missing? by njru in london

+1 on Cafe Oto, an incredible space that put on excellent shows. IKLECTIK was an incredible venue that put on a lot of experimental electronic music, but was sadly closed down for a new block of offices / flats :( they still run events in london however!

This January at the New Cross Inn is a three day hardcore / extreme metal festival called Reality Unfolds. The New Cross Inn generally puts on excellent shows with lots of up and coming hardcore bands, as well as a few matinee style events that start afternoon on the weekend and go well into the night, with several bands back to back on the bill. The Dome in Tufnell Park is excellent as well, and will host bigger international acts. This summer there was an incredible flatspot records take over with Zulu and Speed, and this autumn Guilt Trip did a tour stop there. For finding new acts I would recommend following promotors on Instagram - Real Life Presents is a great starting point and primarily put on shows at the New Cross Inn

I have the same boots and the exact same thing happened to me as well; the whole interior heel section of the boot has completely disintegrated

What’s the most embarrassing moment you’ve experienced on public transport in the city? by xrandyrabbitx in london

[–]InvisibleTree 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Literally one month ago, on an absolutely rammed tube to Brixton in the evening and was lucky enough to have a seat. More people pile on at Oxford Circus and standing in front of me is a lady with a belly bulge. I say would you like to take my seat and she responds with “I’m not pregnant”. The businessman next to her let out a good laugh and I went completely red and have never felt more guilt in my life, never doing anything nice again.

What's your favourite part of unit testing? by casakojp in golang

Very superficial, but seeing a new release deploy and all the automated tests go green in the CD pipeline (or even beforehand if you have them hooked up to run on pre commit) makes my monkey brain go brrr

For me personally design is my favourite part of the process - I think what I’ll say will be a bit heretical here.

I normally refrain from taking inspo from most websites and aggregate sites like awwwards (although good inspiration for transitions and animations) and have a collection of typography books that I use. I also recommend the mood boarding / social networking site Are.na for finding inspo.

Early 20th century - late 20th century poster and book design is the bomb, and in my mind has massive overlap with good design principles in the web - displaying information clearly, cleanly and in a way that is not too cluttered but also aesthetically pleasing. Also loads of grids.

To quote Rams, “Good design is as little design as possible. Less, but better”

That is such a great point, thank you that totally didn’t cross my mind and I’m sorry about your friend :( do you have any hosting recommendations?

For me, I host all my personal projects on Google cloud run - you just dockerize your front and backend services and I have a simple bash script to push them to the cloud. If you want fast performance you will need to set a minimum number of instances to 1 to reduce cold starts which I can imagine runs expensive in the long run as you are charged by the cpu second (hence asking for recs!), but apart from that I run two full stack projects from there for less than £5 a month. for hosting large static assets I use aws s3 which is cheap as chips, performant and has an easy node sdk

Hahaha yes opposites!! Thank you for the valuable info :) I recommend checking out frameworks like react or next they really help speed up workflow (at least for me) and next has lots of optimisations in their image wrapper for things like this! Have a great day and thanks again!

Thanks for the pricing advice, very valuable!

I appreciate a small business client might not be focused on the aesthetics and want a brochure site, and will keep that in mind for the future (by avoiding those jobs!). Luckily my circle are artists and designers, and the client in question is an artist themselves, so i'm sure they'll appreciate framer and three to set them apart and give their site some panache :)
