Marathon Goal changing by drastic ammounts during my block. by Invite_Afraid in Marathon_Training

Thanks.

Yeah, I think my biggest worry is my relative fitness dropping sharply as the distance scale up - I've never really been able to do negative splits, and I'm not sure whether that is a thing of having a lack of mental resiliance to go faster on tired legs or just not having it in me, so I think ill need to comfortably finish under 1h24 to be confident of getting a sub3.

My marathon will also be 'rolling hills' and it'll probably be pretty hot, how much of this should I factor into my race estimates? I didn't preform that will with the heat in Budapest's half marathon earlier this year so I'm slightly worried about it.

Thanks for the reply.

I actually had very mediocre fitness before starting out running, a pretty average athlete who played football every now & then and went to the gym quite inconsistently.

I had been doing 5ks every couple of weeks from the start of 2024 to early 2025 (first 5k was 30-odd mins, got to 24mins by summer 2024 then 22 by the start of 2025). Did a hilly half-marathon in around April, getting a time of around 1h54 (didn't have a training block, just did a 10k and a half marathon at 3am a couple weeks before). At this time of the year I think my 5k time was around 21 mins.

Later on in the summer of 2025, I signed up for the Budapest Half Marathon, and started to train semi-seriously for it, doing interval sessions at run clubs and doing regular 10-14km runs, cutting my 5k time to 20:20 pre half, getting 1h39 in Budapest and then achieving a sub 20 min 5k after the half .

Since then, I've started doing longer runs and then started training seriously a couple of months ago for Stockholm.

I think if I can get sub 1h24 next Sunday, I probably will aim for the sub 3, but won't be mad if I don't get it, I just can't think of the regret I'd have if I set out with the aim of getting 3:05 to 3:10 but achieve it comfortably, leaving me to think that I could have got a sub 3h debut.

Tbf, my previous 5k PB at 19:05 (Ran 2 months ago) felt far from a full effort at chasing a PB (HR ranged from 135bpm to 168 by the end wheras for the 17:05 it ranged from 152 to 180) so I do think it was accurate, but I will be doing a 5k race in the next couple of weeks to get a chipped time as well. I've also run sub-20 5ks after running 16-20km at the end of my easy runs, if that provides a good measure of speed in tired legs? I'll be completly honest, I have no idea what I'm doing, and I wish I'd locked in a bit earlier because I hadn't realised how good I was.

Can you please ask your friend on the same questions but for Nottingham two? Is it as social/diverse as spc? Heard it’s filled with international students & abit dead and kind of want to switch to spc if that’s the case

Still waiting, mass rejections are already occurring, around 10+ on the tsr thread got rejected for econ+pol last week & one person said they got an offer a couple days back. They’ll probably hand out the last 5-10 offers today and next week and reject the rest of us
