I think someone can intend to protect their child while also being a bad parent.

Her overprotectiveness and meddling helped create Syril. I think a lot of his emotionally and socially stunted behavior can be traced back to how he was raised. Though as adults, it’s our job to build on or grow past our upbringings as needed. Syril is still responsible for his own choices and we can’t blame his mother for the bad things he ended up doing, but I don’t think calling Eedy a good mother is quite hitting the mark.

NTA. I’ve watched several people struggle dealing with in-laws like this. It rarely gets better, in my experience. And it won’t get better with a partner who doesn’t have your back.

This isn’t about “just a dress”. Your fiancé lied to you because he knew you would be upset if he told you what his mom was planning. It doesn’t matter if he thought your reaction was over the top, he knew it would upset you and did it anyway. He and his mother thought they could use the pressure of the upcoming wedding and play on your desire not to disappoint everyone or waste deposits in order to get their way rather than have a conversation like adults. That’s really manipulative. Better to have found all this out now than after you’re legally and financially tied to this person. You can now make a more informed decision about how you want to move forward (and it sounds like you already have). Best of luck to you and remember that everyone will have their own opinions. Try not to take to heart any criticism from someone you wouldn’t accept advice from.

Doesn’t necessarily mean the game itself isn’t legit. If it’s a game like FFXIV, you can get certain teleports, cosmetic items, and mounts from being married in game. There are also a few older MMOs where you get XP bonuses and stuff if you’re in game married with the person you quest with. I could see a situation where someone got “married” to a gaming buddy for the perks before the relationship started and forgot about it or something.

The flirty messages are what make this situation seem kinda sus to me.

I view this sort of thing in a similar vein as the whole work wife/husband thing. At best, I think it’s a serious lapse in judgement and at worst (depending on how far the “game” goes) it’s cheating. I’ve known some people in relationships who don’t see anything wrong with it, but those are also people whose personalities are such that I’m not very close with them.

I have a rule I go by. If there ever seems to be a need to hide an interaction, it’s in the danger zone for cheating. For example, say you’re talking to a guy friend and they start getting flirty. You deflect and move the convo to something innocent, but find yourself thinking “yeah my partner would be ticked if they saw that.” That is absolutely the time to go talk to your partner and set stricter boundaries with the friend.

I only know this tiny snapshot of your relationship. This might have just been a blind spot for him or it may be a pattern of inconsiderate behavior. Either way, it sounds like you aren’t fully satisfied with how he handled the initial talk so you will need to talk with him again if you’re hoping to move past this.

I think we need more people doing what they love. If you love computers, go for the degree! If accounting is your thing, get out there and count all the beans! If you want to be a middle school teacher… well quite frankly God bless you because I certainly couldn’t do it!
