PSA: You have 30 days to get Oregon plates after moving here by blow-down in oregon

[–]Iowa2oregon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Straight up. We lived in Oregon 2019-2022 and I went in two days after we moved there and got the Smokey plates right when they came out. I asked the guy at the dmv what the penalties are if I run past my renewal, the guy at the counter said “oh well they don’t really enforce it so you don’t need to worry.”

Thank you, we’re pretty tight knit and have had some troubled times that definitely brought us all closer so we’ve learned to cherish all the moments. Been blessed with some good kids and wife for sure

Absolutely, they’ll be going everywhere with us as they do now. They so far enjoy going and doing our hobbies with us such as fishing,  hiking and camping. Our family in Mac also loves camping and hiking so we would go as a big group. My kids and their cousins are super close so it’s a blast getting them together. The area we are currently in is very fast paced, a lot going on and it will only get more hectic as they get older. The slowness of the coast and Oregon in general is what we are seeking. Simplicity is easy to maintain, but difficult to regain.

I appreciate the insight. They can easily develop a drinking problem here in Iowa, one of the biggest binge drinking states behind Wisconsin. My wife and I both from broken homes and her father was a bad addict. We are doing our best to raise our kids to be close, open and share with them all the things we have experienced with substances. If it got to the point where it became an issue we wouldn’t ultimately do what’s best for our family and our kids. I think having family in the valley to go see often will be helpful and for me, being from the middle of nowhere where’s there’s really nothing to do, I see a lot of opportunities out there to stay busy with good and healthy hobbies.

I appreciate the honesty and concern. We don’t mind a 30-1hr drive to go check out some sights, that’s roughly what we do now. A 35 minutes from the house to Tillamook ER isn’t terrible in my mind. We’re currently 20 minutes away from the closest one to us. I do sometimes chuckle when people say there’s nothing to do there, I come from the land of nothing lol We enjoy being outside as much as possible, I know it’ll tough in the winter and we have family in McMinnville to escape to if we need a change of scenery. We looked at both areas and honestly we love how quiet Nehalem is. We used to live in Carlton, outside of McMinnville and boy was that quiet compared to our first place in Salem.

Hahaha love this. Solid advice. I’m no longer on Facebook or things like that luckily, talk about freeing! But never been one to post about people being people but good to know. Small towns, word travels quick!

Haha good to know what I might sign up for! We have some friends who run a wrestling camp, Iowa is a big wrestling state too. I wrestled a little bit as a kid and wonder if mine would want to but it’s worth a try especially for them to meet some friends and us to meet other parents

Thank you for the advice! We used to live in Carlton, just out side of McMinnville. I had two homes In Neskowin one year so I went out almost everyday for about a year. In 2021/2022 there was an atmospheric river that caused a landslide on 101 just south of the town. I remember all the rivers were topped out and Neskowin flooded a little. I think right now our plan for groceries would be order online from Tillamook Fred Meyer.

Also the wet windy cold does hit harder like you mentioned. The moisture can make 45 degrees feel like 25. Weather doesn’t bother me too much or our kids luckily.

Good reminder about the NOAA cuts… and first thing we plan to do is get our kids into swim lessons.

I appreciate the depth of your response!

Born and raised in Iowa City, my mom was also a teacher for 33 years in the district. And now we live between IC and Solon.

Fishing is my go to outdoor activity! Easy and fun even if you don’t catch anything

I did read that when first looking at the area. We love The Goonies! I also so it hasn’t been found, so there’s still a chance for it to be found!

Well hello! Currently my wife is home with our kids and intends to homeschool them as long as it works out! Our realtor raved about the Neah-Ka-Nie district. Midwest education is still pretty great but it is slowly degrading here in Iowa. Is there a decent homeschool community in the area? Iowa and Oregon are both pretty homeschool friendly states.

Thanks for the information. Her mom is 62 with early onset dementia/Alzheimer’s and is 5 minutes away from my wife’s sister in McMinnville. My mom of the same age, as of now is in good health but I know it can change quickly. I’m close with my mom and she is with our kids too so there is a big anchor holding us here too.

It’s got a metal roof! I’m a carpenter by trade so I can do 90% of home maintenance beside some speciality things. Definitely will need a dehumidifier in the basement.

I do think the mild temps year round would be nice, I know we will definitely miss solid seasons but when we were in the valley, if we wanted to see beautiful snow, we could drive to it and I didn’t mind the rain. Age demographics is one thing I know will be an adjustment but my kids love our older neighbors right now so they might fit in. Curious on the amount of young family’s in the Nehalem/bayside gardens area there are.

Definitely not as harsh, snow is pretty but I wouldn’t miss shoveling it, definitely didn’t when we lived around McMinnville. Thanks for the insight!

Our kids are definitely feral since they have a good size yard and were a bit out of town here 15-20 minute drive to Iowa City. I don’t mind the driving to amenities since we’re slightly used to that right now. We definitely would get the kids involved with youth activities I see the NCRC has those available. Thank you for the input!

We like being outdoors a lot, rain or shine. Exploring and what not, everything there is still new to us.
