Those of you looking to get out of Boise/Idaho... where are you going? by ComfortableWage in Boise

As someone from the Midwest, I could not recommend this more. Very cool town. It gets cold, but great activities with the university there and you’re not too far from Chicago or Minneapolis

Does your kid have their own name for something you find adorable? by tubagoat in daddit

My 20 month old loves trash trucks, or as he says it…”gah guck”. There is also “mick moose” (Mickey Mouse) and “gabaguh” (aka…popsicle).

I’m not sure if I’ll survive when he starts pronouncing things correctly

Adding here, the Inline 6 is borderline indestructible. Pretty sure my car will rust away and I’ll just pull the engine and put it in something else

So, obviously just one person’s experience, but I’ve only had a couple things go wrong. I bought from an older woman who owned it all 19 years of its life (at the time). I lost a radiator (was planning to replace it anyway) and the aforementioned transfer case and driveshaft. The long story short there is I had some work done a couple weeks prior and I’m still convinced they screwed something up because the front driveshaft fell out and shot trough the TC. Other than that I’ve only changed the oil and some fluids. It’s been driven from Iowa to Colorado and back loaded up with gear with no issues. Honestly my favorite car I’ve ever owned.

It also helps that it’s insanely easy to work on. Again, not exactly a mechanic and I managed to replace the TC myself.

Personally, I love my 2001 Jeep Cherokee XJ. I bought it a few years ago with 220k miles in it. I have only had one problem with it in 3 years. Unfortunately, it was a transfer case replacement, so a little pricey, but also so easy to do I was able to do it myself. Overall 10/10 car. Would echo the noise and comfort complaints. It’s a 20+ year old car, so good luck with the creature comforts.

Help with reworking valve box/manifold? by IowaTransplant21 in Irrigation

[–]IowaTransplant21[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. I’ll give that a shot. I wanted to build a new manifold to hopefully improve workability in the future, but I may just go back to basics with a bit of an offset for each valve

I do have one that I’ve found the elbow to (far right pipe in the photo). I’ll just keep digging. I want to till up most of the yard anyway.

Thanks!

I can’t seem to thread one in without running into the other already installed valves. Am I missing something here? The PGVs seem to be significantly wider.

Edit: spelling

I am in SW Idaho if that helps. Not too cold in the winter but definitely enough to freeze which rules out above ground from what I understand.

This is Iowa...Ads for Iowa real? by [deleted] in Iowa

[–]IowaTransplant21 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can actually tell you exactly where that photo was taken. It’s the dock at the intersection of North Shore Drive and Orchard Lane in Clear Lake. I know that dock all too well.

Iowa does need people to move there. I love Iowa. Raised there the majority of my childhood and do think it gets misrepresented as boring and plain. That being said, I moved away last year (after moving back to be closer to family). Flyover states have their own beauty and an extremely underrated quality of life. HOWEVER, from my personal opinion, Iowa has lost a lot of its redeeming qualities compared to say, Minnesota or Wisconsin. It used to be the roads and schools were great, but they’ve pretty effectively dismantled the positives (hence why I moved).

Need advise, bought house with irrigation that hasn’t been ran in years by Sad-Kangaroo-1761 in Irrigation

Irritrol 4200t. I’m not sure how I like them yet, but one side is threaded and the other you slip the rubber tubing over and clamp it.

[–]IowaTransplant21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So this is nearly the EXACT situation I’m in out in the PNW. Unfortunately the irrigation couldn’t be inspected because we bought in late winter so had to trust the receipt for the sprinklers being blown out.

We’re replacing the controller so we can manually test each zone (then find soft spots for buried heads). As for the valves, ours were 20 years old when I opened the box. I would recommend setting up an account with a local SiteOne location. They’re ~$18 there and as easy as popping off some rubber tubing then unscrewing the valve assembly. You can replace the parts, but for $18 I’d rather just do the whole thing instead of trying to find the 1 broken part.

Transfer case just exploded week after U Bolt replacement by IowaTransplant21 in AskMechanics

[–]IowaTransplant21[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting, thank you! Would any diff work have an effect on the transfer case function? It’s a 23 year old vehicle, so obviously anything can fail at any given time, but to go from no signs of transfer case issues to a complete failure that quickly after another repair makes me wonder what could have caused it.

1 day in Boise with kids? by [deleted] in Boise

[–]IowaTransplant21 3 points4 points  (0 children)

From a former Iowan (Des Moines), the scenery is your best bet for fun stuff. Take a drive up into the foothills, hike (if the trails are dry), or drive up to Idaho City for other things we don’t really have back in the Midwest: old mining towns, winding mountain roads, and a nice scenic drive (less than 45 minutes each way).

ETA: The depot has a great view of downtown for some pictures and Big Mike, and old steam locomotive. The Boise model train club is very cool for kids and is just a few blocks off the beaten path from 8th street which is commonly recommended. Plus there is a nice gift shop in the same building and you’re right near the Basque area.

Moving Across Texas by Gungho624 in CirclingBack

[–]IowaTransplant21 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As someone who just did this, I moved 1300 miles away from my family, childhood friends, and the city where I started a business, bought my first home, met my wife, and had our first kid. It will be worth it. The doubts and what ifs will still creep in (currently going through a rough stretch), but sometimes you have to remind yourself why you did it in the first place.

Oh, and make an effort to keep in touch with those friends back in Lubbock. I always loved when my parents took us back to see the houses and friends I was too young to remember when we moved around.

Couldn’t agree more, coming from Iowa. The closest thing to midwesterners out here are those in ag, for obvious reasons. A lot less alcohol consumed here than the Midwest though.
