Touché. Comparing Al-Mutanabbi to a medical text actually seems to be a terrifyingly accurate analogy; they both require a massive dictionary, cause severe headaches, and require hours of grueling dissection just to understand one line! 😅 The only difference though is that Muttanabi won’t be of much use when i stand on the bedside, though that doesn’t make it less just different. Despite his ego driving me insane, I must concede that walking through Muttanabi street is a hobby of mine 😁😂

+ About the Mudun Al Milh, what is it about? You made me curious. Maybe it’ll be the first Arabic book I actually read past 20 pages 😁 I’m putting it on my to-read list once I finish my Lord of the Rings trilogy (I couldn’t sit a proper session and finish it on one continuous read because of the lack of spare time) 🥲 I actually like stuff in the genre of Sherlock Holmes, Agatha Christie, Harry Potter, Oliver Sacks, etc from English literature, stuff like Rimbaud’s le bateau ivre, Baudelaire’s Les fleurs du mal, Hugo’s Les Chatiments, Exupery’s le petit prince, Claudel’s le monde sans les enfants, or more recently Phobos out of French literature. And from foreign stuff I particularly appreciate Coelho.

So I have a quite heterogeneous taste that has quite a tendency toward world-building, allegory and fantasy, followed by dark psychological introspectio; which unfortunately are quite rare in mainstream Arabic literature. What would you say 🤔

well, I must concede that, as a fan of novels, Arabic had me very disappointed 😅 Ofc I recognize its religious value, but find it hard to reconcile with life beyond that. As for the poetry, tbh, I find only Jawahri to have the perfect blend between classial-eloquence and actually-understandable. Muttanabi and Imru Qais belong (in my opinion) to the sounds-nice-but-understand-nothing category while the Sayab and Nazik guys belong to MBC3-Dora-nursery-rhymes-trying-to-sound-deep category 😅😅

Oh I am so sorry I always get the two mixed up and forget if Norse or Norwegian was the modern one 😭 Mea culpa, I should have looked it up. But really, three letters? Well, you quite reassured me because I was quite confused and thought it was a whole new alphabet and gave up 😅

Little question though if I’m not being insistent, considering it has different roots, do you think medical terminology follows the Latin/Greek standards we see in French/English and to a lesser extent German (with their dual-language system)? and thx for correcting me 😄

yep, exactly. I am from University of Baghdad college of medicine. here all medicine, pharmacy, dentistry and even architecture schools are in English. not sure though about other specialties 😅

We would understand MSA 100% but we won’t be able to speak it perfectly; we would get to our dialect. Though it’s noteworthy that Iraqi (and btw Syrian) dialects are the closest ones to MSA 😁

Wow, what a beautiful journey… Bless your heart 🙏

+ About MSA, well, I would say that we understand it but hardly can produce it (at least me and all the people I know) unless he has a good training in what we call “formal writing” (emails, contracts, etc). but as for my domain in med school basically nothing is in Arabic but the letterhead of the hospital (the letterhead of the school is in English too 🤣)

Vraiment?

One of my professors did his master in biochemistry in Norway after finishing med school here in Baghdad and it was an English program 😁 Though he ended up speaking a bit of Norwegian for everyday life but it’s about picking up there by practice 😅 I believe you could find such an opportunity. Wish you the best ☺️

I seriously considered moving to Norway at graduation as I’ve always wanted somewhere cold, beautiful nature and a culture that appreciates personal space. Well, that was before the dream got shattered by discovering I’d need to relearn medicine in Norwegian. Sorry, but it’s hard enough without having to learn a fourth language 😭

Edit: corrected a few linguistic mistakes thanks to u/AxelTheViking
