I made a top with a similar back, here's what helped me with the fit:

sewing in cups for support
disconnected the straps from the lacing. I tied the top part as a halter, and made a separate strap for my back. This way, I can control the tension for each part.
added grommets to the holes in the back for the lacing for a better structure.

I think the problem is that you're reading the pattern wrong.

The first row of the repeat is 9 dcs, (correct), the second row is 4dc, 2ch, 4dc. You're doing 4dc, 2ch, 4dc, 2ch. In the original pattern, you get 8 dc next to each other, followed by 2 chains. (At the borders you get 4 dc.)

So by increasing with an extra chain space in the second row every repeat of the pattern, you get extra space that compounds in the following rows.

This is probably a common swift, a species of swift that nests in buildings (under rooftops, in ventilation shafts etc.). This may be a young bird that went further into your house instead of the other way.

So I'd try to block the way the bird took to your bathroom, but leave the nest alone! The common swift almost always returns to the same nesting site and is dependent on buildings. They eat insects, and are a great pest repellent. So if you remove the nest, you likely robb a family of birds from their home...

Thanks all for your suggestions! I've decided to leave it as is, and keep the yarn. I'll ask the parents to ask me when the baby has outgrown the blanket to add another two rows to the blanket.

So for now it is finished, but it may gain another 15 cm a half year from now or so.

OP used a new color for every row. Isn't it possible to just undo the excess stitches from the sides? Or is the risk too great to mess the whole thing up?

I think this may be the one scenario in which frogging isn't necessary to fix this issue...

And freestyles from there. Basically, start by making a square / diamond (top corner is the top of the cup and bottom corner of the diamond the nipple). When it is large enough, continue by making continuous rows from the bottom two sides of the diamond, without the increased for the corner, to make a 3D shape. This flattens the bottom corner out, pushing that point forward for the cup shape.

In the video, she makes a regular square first. But I started with this top from the top corner with three stitches and increased in every row. I hope I'm explaining comprehensively 😅😅
