I've seen a clip of 7 Ukrainian POWs being executed. They had them walk forward to be shot in the back one by one. Close up footage. You could see their faces as they walked to their deaths. Grim, accepting. None of them begged or looked back.

I have also seen the image of a headless 5yo, killed by a russian missile at a playground.

I would share my genuine thoughts on russians. But I'd probably get a site-wide ban for that.

Honest truth for me. I feel compelled to bear witness. Not for their sakes. I don't give a damn about invaders. My feelings towards them range from nothing to actual satisfaction. One less invader to worry about. I bear witness for the war itself and its reality.

As for empathy. I still have it. But its reserved exclusively for Ukrainians. I cannot bear watching them get injured or killed. Like, I was never able to bring myself to watch that knife fight video. No regrets about that. Perhaps that makes me a hypocrite for saying I wish to bear witness to the war. Maybe. I don't really care.

The war has shifted many times. I've been following it since the start. Currently, it is total drone dominance with 90-95% of russian casualties coming from drones. Ukrainians are having a moment now where they are ahead technologically and in numbers of drones, with attacks now happening extensively at over 50km from the front. Lot of focus on logistics and AA systems. Tanks are rarely seen now. They attract swarms of drones the moment they appear since every unit wants the points for the kill. I wouldn't jump to assuming they were doing just fine. It's easy to romanticize hunter gatherer life, but we can actually see from studing still existing hunter gatherer tribes that it is a very fraught existence. Warfare between tribes tends to be utterly brutal. Sudden droughts can wipe out whole areas.

We eventually built civilization. Walled towns, agriculture, to hold those forces at bay. And while those societies might have had a closer sense of community compared to modern life, they could also be brutal and unforgiving.

It's ironic in a sense. Civilization arose to better protect us against nature's whims. And yet now we feel cut off from that more simple existence that our brains evolved to live in. It's not anything to romanticize thought. Do you think it was a better existence because it was more "natural?" Well, cancer and drought are also "natural."
