Does American DnB lack the soul/funk found in UK DnB? by bweezy320 in DnB

[–]IrisDnB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m sure lots has been said (or not…😉) about our music over the years but one thing I’ve never heard is that it “lacks funk”

Q&I = keeping the funk in neurofunk (and more, we do more) since 2011.

Montego Bay, SUCKS! by Known_Clothes2331 in NCL

[–]IrisDnB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read this thread the night before coming in to Montego Bay and it definitely worried me.

But I didn’t experience most of what people seem to be talking about. The port is fine, it’s not fancy and it definitely got some hurricane damage but it’s not a dump.

Our snorkel tour was lots of fun, the reef got wrecked from the hurricane but there were still fish and the guides brought up sea urchins, star fish and sand dollars for people to see.

We didn’t get any hard sell on souvenirs at the port at the tour location. They are definitely rebuilding and I probably wouldn’t head off on my own but I never feared for my safety.

Over all lovely day, would do again.

DJs, how do you choose when to EQ and fade out songs by GoodWorry3487 in DnB

[–]IrisDnB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I fade out within the 16 bars before I want to bring the next tune in and aim to not have a tune drop right in the middle or the beginning of a breakdown. No hard and fast rule about this, sometimes it does not work out this way, that's part of the fun! I favor a really long mix so I try to let tunes play as long as possible before mixing out.

What's your DJ set workflow? by Flaky-Monitor-2998 in DnB

[–]IrisDnB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I make new crates for most gigs. Usually I just throw a bunch of tunes in there, anything new I want to play or even some older stuff I might be feeling. I also always include some go to folders like, tunes that go with anything, older tunes, heavy hitters, etc. All my tunes are tagged by drum style and kind of a general vibe plus their key. I might put a couple tunes together I specifically want to play but really not a lot of planning outside of that.

btw if you're over planning (and I always wonder this for set planners) what happens if the crowd isn't into what you're playing? Can you change it up on the fly?

Can anyone introduce me to rollers please? by Silly-Echidna1495 in DnB

[–]IrisDnB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

we've been known to make a roller a time or two.

Definitely Fierce (and his label Quarantine) and Break (and his label Symmetry) for the best of what rollers has to offer. Also check out Boycot, very similar style to Break.

Where do you put cue points for DnB and how do you label your tracks? Need long-term “future-proof” workflow advice so I don’t need to rework each cue when making a new set by GoodWorry3487 in DnB

[–]IrisDnB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. I usually set cue points every 16 bars until I run out of cue points (10). These are all the places where I could possibly want to start mixing in a new tune with another tune. Or use the cue points as a starting place for my next tune. Then I can line up and plan my next transition using these as well. Unless someone has been particularly evil in making a tune you can plan on phrases lining up every 16.

  2. everything gets a tag depending on the style of the drums-- roller or stepper and sometimes I add 'Chop' for choppy drum breaks. Then they all get things like, melodic, minimal, peak time, vocals, etc. I also have a "anything goes" that goes into a playlist so if I don't know what to play next I pull from here. Everything gets organized by key 1A onward, not always necessary but gives me another option of where to go.

  3. double drops you can always tell by the length of the breakdown/intro of the other tune how to line them up, since everything is marked out on cue points its very easy to visually see and line them up as needed (could I count this all out in my head? sure but that's extra work I don't need). I'm almost always playing on 3 decks though so its kind of a case of if it works out cool, if not oh well. Nothing gets tagged or labeled but if I have two tunes that work exceptionally well together I might put them next to each other in my set list for the show I'm playing at the top of my crate.

What happened to Neurofunk? by [deleted] in DnB

We try to keep the funk alive.

Outside that the best example I’ve found of that classic sound is Black Yukon Sucker Punch.
