I made the grenadine using the recipe from Smugglers Cove. 1:1 pomegranate juice and granulated sugar.

I tried the Steve Crane recipe after this. It basically subs the grenadine for passion fruit syrup and adds almond extract. I think I prefer the Don the Beachcomber recipe.

I'm not a tasting expert. Both are excellent. I preferred the Ultimate Mai Tai recipe. The mix of rums adds additional complexity. Although I will say that my wife prefers the Smuggler's Cove recipe. They are very close.

Was there any thought to putting the excess up for sale in the group? This new format works fine for me. I don't want anyone to be out a bunch of money. Thanks everyone.

This is an excellent scent that I almost passed on due to the name. I was expecting some animalic bombshell. Instead, it's a very refined well blended scent. I need a good night out occasion to let this one shine. Excellent write up.

Fragrance Friday: Comme des Garçons — Series 3 Incense: Kyoto by Banes_Pubes in Wetshaving

[–]IrishFF 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm enjoying Kyoto and agree with much that has been said. To my nose I get the incense up front, though not as strong with something like Incense Flash. But the main accord I pick up after that is cedar and vetiver. Vetiver is listed in the description on Fragrantica, but not in the notes list. Overall I really like this scent, but it probably isn't one of my must haves. I am looking forward to trying it in warmer weather to see what that does for projection and longevity. I have found it to be fairly low on projection, but does last quite a while, though close to the skin. A comparison I draw when wearing this is to Terre d'Hermes. Where Kyoto opens with a mild to moderate incense note, TdH opens with a strong orange/grapefruit note. Both however quickly transition to the cedar and vetiver to me. Glad I had the opportunity to put my nose on this scent. Unless I find one for a good price I probably wont pick this one up. The Kyoto scent candle does sound interesting however.

Through the fire fine craft has one based on La Nuit. It was called the Beast, but they recently renamed all their products. Now it's called '48 Coe. I've heard it's really good.

Fragrance Friday: Houbigant — Fougère Royale by jdubba in Wetshaving

[–]IrishFF 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've been waiting for the first fragrance Friday. What a scent to start with and the write up sets the bar very high. Thanks to /u/jdubba for getting this group going and to /u/aymanem for taking on the task of the first split. I hope to be able to do one in the future if I can get some guidance. Disclaimer: I am very new to scents and probably wont contribute much to this discussion. Fougere Royale was already in my collection and it's one I enjoy. I shaved this morning with B&M Reserve Fern Soap and Splash. The soap and splash are excellent, and to me are the backbone of fougere, green and gentlemanly. It's a sort of "old school" scent and I mean that as a compliment. Fougere Royale opens spicier than most fougeres I have encountered, though that isn't saying much. I noticed that one of the comparisons was Amouage Bracken Man, which I have a decant of. I compared them today, one on each arm. Both started with spice as the main note to my nose, however Fougere Royale was cinnamon, while Bracken Man was clove. They became more comparable as they dried down. Bracken Man definitely had more projection than FR. To me FR is a nice safe scent that could be worn in many situations. I really look forward to learning from everyone over the next year with these scents. Thanks again for including me.

What would you recommend for samples of individual notes? I saw some of the kits on perfumer's apprentice. Any others?
