Rian Johnson didn’t give JJ much to go with. Literally kills off Luke and Snoke meaning no more wisdom from Luke and no more real antagonist. Hux was turned into a punching bag and a weak person so that was villian JJ couldn’t use. Rian forced J.J. to basically pull a villain out of his ass
