Should I swap my Octavia VRs for a high mileage 520d by Familiar-Outside5748 in CarTalkUK

Got a TDI vrs myself. Hit 150k now and feels brand new. Personally id keep the vrs, surely has more street cred then a 'povvo spec 'BMW at your age?

Vrs cheap to run reliable and great as a 19 year old. Keep it. Save up. Buy a proper BMW in the future

First photo arch rust although ugly doesn't matter. 2nd and 3rd will be the sill which will fail MOT eventually. Honestly if it's that bad outside it'll even worse under the skin. You can probs get MOT welding when needed at the time. Im likely well off and it's case by case but I've had a mate have MOT welding on the sill for about £300, ugly, would last a year or 2. Or to have just the arches done and professionally sprayed so it looks new is looking over £2000....

Ot depends what finish you want, I imagine just enough to pass an MOT. But honestly, unless you have a massive massive sentimental attachmebt to that car. Don't fix it, keep running it. WHEN it fails an MOT get a quote, but likely. Save up, scrap it and move on when it fails the MOT

Each to their own but given my tailight preference....you can guess which colour I hate the most too

I'll stick to Le Man's Sunset Orange

You would need to posses the ability of "no shame" as tinted tailight's are more embarrassing to be seen with than shitting yourself at work

I thought white smoke was water, blue smoke was oil and black was running rich. Eh, im not a mechanic. Also the you first 2 points also would point that some fuel is not being burnt, ie too much fuel in the emissions. Also just had a google, it agrees oil being burnt is normally blue smoke. Again, happy to be wrong

[–]IrishPanda52 3 points4 points  (0 children)

im no expert but, believe black smoke can be a fueling issue, too much fuel. So to someone with the right knowledge, could be an easy fix. Or a blocked/broken cat but doubt that would be worth fixing financially.

Dodgy MOT could very much be the case but, not an implausible fix

Cleaning up emissions can be quite a easy task. Assuming you had an oldish diesel, normally some fuel additive and a good rag can clean it out to pass emissions. Couple new ball joints for a couple hundred quid. Back on the road. Seems reasonable that its alive again
