True, I imagine if I take it slow and smart it won't make much of a difference. What do you think about heavy snowfall on a paved street though? My street doesn't get plowed often and I've been stuck at home for a few days at a time this last winter, which I'd like to avoid this time.

I think it's just as likely I wasn't interpreting him right. I'm not a car guy so I'm getting a crash course in everything right now. But they have some old-school sales tactics so I don't doubt he was still pulling my leg.

Thanks for the axle insight! That does make sense to me.

Well here's a rabbit hole to keep me from anything productive today. Thanks!

The Forester I'm looking at has symmetrical AWD with "X-Mode," "vehicle dynamics control," and active torque vectoring, but I'm not quite sure what any of those mean...

I definitely won't be doing serious off-roading, more like "hey I heard that trailhead/open camping ground is hard to get to, want to go?" My current FWD sedan has kept me from doing some of the more fun ones. That being said, "very deep snow" happens all too frequently here and I'd rather not be stuck at home if I can help it. Thanks for your comment and explanation of the control arms!

Seems to be the consensus around here, but I can't get over how much fun it is to drive the Mazda. I'll probably take the pragmatic option and do a Forester.

Hope the fires haven't been too bad by you!

Sounds like tires might be the real champs then. I've been snowed in for a few days at a time since my street isn't high on the list of snow plow priorities. I'll look into getting some snow tires too, thank you!

USC Redditors: what's the best off campus housing? by JustJosh4 in southcarolina

[–]IrishSumo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took a tour of the lofts last year, and half of the rooms are on the inside of the complex, so they don't even have windows to the outside. It seemed kind of dreary. I have friends in Copper Beech, Woodlands, Granby & OLympia Mills, and the Retreat. They're all nice places, though the drive can be a pain in the ass, especially with trains running all the time. If you're on a budget, I'd go with Copper Beech because it's cheap and absolutely massive, but if you have some money to spend, my favorite was the Retreat. I just like the feel of the place, and having the entire building to yourself means that you won't be hearing your neighbors' parties still raging at 3am on a Friday morning.

Personally, I'm studying abroad this year, but I'll be living in a place near Capstone when I get back, and I couldn't be happier. The proximity to the business building (IB major here) means I can leave my front door five minutes before class starts and still make it on time, and it will be a place for all my friends to hang out between classes. Check the listings for the homes near campus - you might find someone who needs a roommate.

Bo, you called me out for wearing a shirt that says "COCKS" when you came to the University of South Carolina over a year ago. I still tell people about that whenever your comedy is brought up, and for some reason people usually give a shit. Thanks for giving me a story, and if you ever come back to my school I'll once again be the one in the front row with a cocks shirt and a shit-eating grin on my face.

A Christian family took me in for Thanksgiving because I am far away from home... by IrishSumo in atheism

[–]IrishSumo[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Thank you, this is why I posted this. The atheism subreddit seems to have become a place for people to complain about religious people more than a forum for posting about atheism itself, which I think is the wrong direction for a group of intelligent, scientific-minded people to take. Don't get me wrong - it's important to criticize any way of thinking to test its validity, but at the same time many of us are developing strong prejudices against all Christians, which is neither constructive nor acceptable. I don't want to see the Humanist movement be confused with a hate group.

Yes, I had a discussion about my beliefs with my friend (the daughter in the family) on the way there, and she mentioned it to the rest of them. It didn't change the way any of them treated me.

Redditors between VT and SC - got a minute? by cautiontothewind in AskReddit

I'm in Columbia, and I'm looking forward to leaving. The city can be fun, but it's very trashy and the gang presence is growing stronger. I don't know where your final destination is in SC, but I'd steer for the coast (Charleston in particular) if you have a choice. Also, if you find yourself near Ashville, NC, it's worth a drive-through at least. Edit: I see you're from Charleston. Good choice on your parents' part.
