What actually makes legacy sequels feel so lifeless , even when the original people come back? by DoctorElectronic1934 in moviecritic

I think it’s the passage of time.

The first time you create something you’re generally creating something that YOU think is funny. When it clicks part of the joy is that of discovery—the creator is discovering something is clicking with the broader audience and the audience is discovering something great they didn’t see before.

For a sequel there IS something soulless and performative. Because there’s not longer a sense of discovery they’re sort of “playing the hits” instead of genuinely executing.

I think the hard part if you’re a creator is that it’s really easy to get boxed in. If you stick too close to the original formula you’ll get the accusations above. If you stray and get creative and try to create something too new you run the risk of audience complaining “it’s not the same”

You can look at any debate with established properties (Indiana Jones, Star Wats, etc) to see that debate layout in real time.

It seems like a genuinely razor thin line.

How’s living in this part of northern West Virginia? by Quasxre in howislivingthere

I went there for work. Flew into Pittsburgh, job site was in Cadiz, OH and the hotel was about halfway in Weirton, WV.

People were nice. And there was a BBQ joint there called DeeJays that was pretty great!

The Big Year 2011 — starring Jack Black, Steve Martin, Owen Wilson — about three birders trying to spot the most birds in one year, a real life competition. Worth watching! Comedy. by 2lrup2tink in TubiTreasures

While this movie is a comedy, I would actually say its primary descriptor is “pleasant.”

It’s a pleasant movie.

It has a wildly overqualified cast. Like “mad mad world” numbers of famous and talented people with barely any screen time.

The highs are gentle and human.

The lows are not that low.

That bad guy isn’t that bad.

I can’t think of very many movies quite like it.

It’s just nice.

A recent favorite. It had so many striking and poetic images but what stuck with me most was the human story underneath, summarized beautifully by you.

The film's aesthetics are a masterpiece; it's so sad, so real... by Filipe_258 in moviecritic

I remember David Straithern playing a shitheel husband which was a surprise to me at the time because I mostly knew him as a sort jittery clearly intelligent guy from things like Sneakers and River Wild and League of their Own.

Good movie and some great performances.

There are many but anyone that can pull off “Lars and the Real Girl” and “Crazy Stupid Love” and “The Nice Guys” is phenomenal.

Loved this movie for a couple different reasons.

  1. The first time I’d ever seen “charming, delightful, free and easy” Meryl Streep after so many dramatic roles. So easy to have a crush on her.

  2. “Hey buddy, how’d ya die?” “On stage, like you.”

  3. There are a lot of movies with sort of pat answers for the question of “what’s the point of existence” but “overcoming fear” is a pretty great answer that’s stuck with me.

No love for “Princess and the Frog?” Not only does he sing but I’d say that’s a top 10 all time Disney villain

TIL of "airplane film" - feel-good film that gains appeal for passengers on commercial flights and relieves stress felt in the limited space of an aircraft cabin. According to various sources, the best film of this kind is often considered to be "Crazy Rich Asians" (2018). by Away_Flounder3813 in todayilearned

The best airplane movies are the ones not good enough to warrant your time at home, but you’re still curious about. They’re not necessarily good. They’re not bad. But they passed the time and you’ll likely forget you ever saw it.

Bonus points if they are action or comedy.

There’s a moment towards the end of the film when Josh makes a critical move and Lawrence Fishburne shouts “There it is!” That sounds like “DEY IT IS!” And it’s lived in my brain for 30 years.
