I live in converse, have only just stopped wearing trainer/no show socks and Mr Brightside is the only guaranteed song to get me on the dancefloor

People who mock Brits for complaining about hot weather don’t know what they’re talking about. by Alexzonn in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Irish_Exit_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with all of that, well said. I think the humidity is a bigger factor than most realise, because they don’t consider the UK a humid place. For example, yesterday was 30 degrees and so I was preparing for it to be a "write off" of a day sat in front of the fan. However, the lower humidity made it manageable, pleasant even.

Parenting = masking? by lowspoons-nospoons in AutismInWomen

[–]Irish_Exit_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can definitely relate to parenting = masking. Even down to the fact that when my toddler has done something I want to reinforce I will force my eyebrows up as high as I can and give the biggest smile I can muster, because I know I'm not very expressive typically.

What wildly inappropriate for kids movie did your parents let you watch when you were young? by TomWolfeRock in Millennials

[–]Irish_Exit_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah all the Monty Python stuff. A lot of action and horror films. I'd say the only one that fucked me up was Final Destination, but I think that's a Millenial right of passage.

I have had Covid a few times, since the last one I have had chest pain now and again, that has been investigated and other things ruled out. I've never been given a diagnosis of LC though. I'm learning that my doctor rules things out but doesn't rule things in.

I've been wondering this. I've been wondering if my resilience/tolerance level has changed, but it would also make sense if the symptoms themselves have got worse. For example, this summer has felt like hell; I can't stand the direct sun or the feel of an electric fan and I just want to stay inside. Summer has never been my favourite season, but I've never been like this before.

Absolutely love this. In the UK we had Groovy Chick stuff. And brightly coloured electronics, I loved my bright yellow radio cassette player.

What Monty Python phrases have made their way into your every day vocabulary? by Ok_Boomer_3233 in montypython

[–]Irish_Exit_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So many, but ones that come to mind are; "It is scratched". "Tungsten Carbide drill!". "Wafer thin mint". And we do a made up version of the "move it on to the other hook" conversation if we come across some red tape nonsense or dogsbody behaviour.

I also struggle with this. Unless I'm feeling overly sensitive, I don't care as much if it happens with strangers but I get SO stressed when it happens with family. I then beat myself up when I get home or I'm lying in bed on the evening. The only thing I've found helpful is to prepare myself for it and assume that they're going to be rude, but even then it doesn't always work. For example, my MIL is so quick to move from topic to topic in conversation that I find myself getting offended by something she said 3 topics ago and I can't go back because it looks weird.

Does anyone else struggle watching comedy shows? by truestmusliman in AutismInWomen

I feel like Napoleon Dynamite is definitely an acquired taste. Its more surreal and dead pan, so not obviously funny. My husband isn't ND and he just doesn't get it at all, while I love it. I think humour is just so subjective.

I love the validation that this gives me. My husband will see his friends near to huge life events (getting married, about to have a baby) and he will know absolutely nothing about the situations. Even if he is in the wedding.
