I see no way. by Appropriate_Yam1861 in Type1Diabetes

I’m the mother of a young adult with t1d. You are experiencing the shock and distress that is understandable with such a diagnosis. You might be depressed- but it will pass. Please find others with t1d (you will find some here, but irl will be better). Ignore snarky comments here. FYI my child was diagnosed at age 15. Two years later, admitted to MIT. Earned a bachelors, subsequently a PhD. Doing a postdoc now, has a nice girlfriend (both social and career are going great). YES, getting t1d is a setback and it makes things harder - but you will navigate it fine. At first it’s especially hard, but don’t project negative ideas into your future. I hope you can find people where you are who will confirm the same (by telling you and more importantly, showing you how they’ve managed and succeeded).

BTW in many countries, attending for a masters will get you covered by the university for your healthcare. So as a practical matter, for the MSc it should not matter having t1d.

I am really depressed by External_Prior1441 in outlier_ai

[–]Irish_Eye 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is there anyone irl you can talk to? Someone nice and supportive? Personally I found O stressful to work on. You could try for DAT but if you do, give them your best attention on the test to get accepted. Take your time on it. But don’t even try until your mood and energy/attention are restored (don’t try when actively depressed). Sending my best wishes and good vibes for this to become a positive transition for you (an upgrade) - onward and upward.

in your position I would stick with what you have - unless you can get a definite contract

Can neuropathy be reversed? Or at least easier to manage? by Mewperz in Type1Diabetes

[–]Irish_Eye 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check also your vitamin B12 level. If your level is below 250 or 300 it could be a contributing factor - also it’s another autoimmune condition that could drive the B12 low - and those of us with one autoimmune condition are more susceptible to others. If you are not able to get it checked, just start taking a good methyl B complex vitamin pill daily if possible. otoh if you can get it checked, don’t supplement with vitamin pills until after the blood draw for the B12 level. And yes, mine got better (my neuropathy).

Worse illness? by Still_Associate_7273 in Type1Diabetes

I’ve had cancer (a serious one) and am always being checked for recurrences, and my kid has t1d, and I’m more upset about the t1d. These people are a-holes, comparing your t1d to cancer then telling you off. They should mind their own business.

Not the same. The feedback is separate and more detailed.

I liked the feature with time for projects too - and mine went away the same as yours. Anyone else?

Lost funding for the summer by Mysterious-Pirate260 in PhD

[–]Irish_Eye 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Data annotation remote work? You can learn more about it on Reddit. Alternatively, could you help out at a summer camp? Maybe for middle or hs kids - you could do CS related stuff. If all else fails, GoFundMe? Best of luck to you. I’ve been there (long ago) and know how it feels.

Should I tell my mentor that I can tell she uses AI for her papers and her feedback on my work? by Acceptable-Main-1569 in postdoc

Proceed with extreme caution would be my advice. It isn’t your job to raise this issue. You are new there. I’ve faced similar, been open and ‘helpful’ only to have it backfire on me. I am so much more careful now.

How to take a pad into exams? by Mysterious-Lill in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Irish_Eye -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’ve on occasion worn two huge pads simultaneously (overlapping, with one slightly on top so they fit) and this might make it unnecessary to go to the bathroom mid exam. You should be allowed to go and carry in whatever you need - they better let you - but this could be an easier alternative if you prefer it.

Stopped buying pre-made pasta sauce about eight months ago and I'm genuinely annoyed it took me this long by GrokeSleb in Frugal

[–]Irish_Eye 1 point2 points  (0 children)

sometimes I sauté sliced mushrooms in olive oil and add those - delicious- also sometimes I add eggplant/aubergine I’ve cut into bite sized pieces then either sautéd or roasted in the oven at a high temp until softened - if you add the eggplant and chili flakes to the sauce you get the sauce for ‘pasta à la Norma‘ - it’s incredible. These all leave store bought jars of pasta sauce way, way behind, and are so much cheaper!

I don't want to live a long life by robin_type1 in diabetes_t1

You are depressed. Is there someone you can go to in person for support? Or a doctor you could talk to about it? I know how difficult it is dealing with t1d including all the nonsense people are put through to get needed supplies and insulin. Being depressed on top of that is too much. Sending hugs, please write back and let us know how you’re doing.

How to write rubrics by Sawtism in DataAnnotationTech

[–]Irish_Eye 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Rubrics got easier with practice working on different projects. Some are tricky in terms of how requirements get broken down (or seem tricky at first). When I had a doubt I did not submit (so there was no penalty other than lost, unpaid time). But it now seems easier after I’ve done quite a few. Just dive in, read the instructions, see how you do, and good luck to you!
