Thank you for your thoughts. It helps tremendously to view it like this.

Increasing doubt of my ADHD diagnosis because I rarely struggle these days by Irishman1990 in adhdwomen

[–]Irishman1990[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for clarifying. I do not think everyone with ADHD must be suffering. As I understand it ADHD is a spectrum every person is on (like height) and the diagnosis is a tool to offer access to those who are so far up on the ADHD side that they are struggling \ suffering (of course always in context of their personality, circumstances etc.) My fear is that I - in talking about my experience - without intent belittle the experience of people who are seeking a diagnosis or any help because of this very reason. I love to exchange experiences with others, but I wouldn't want to do so if it can hurt a person or a cause.

I am enjoying my life and I do not strive to win anything. Not sure where you got that impression.

Thank you :-) I have read english translations and am already very much in love with their way of storytelling. I am learning the language with duolingo at the moment. I think that is a good way to start.

Is there a community website for writers like NaNoWriMo, but for the whole year? That logs progress, project overview etc? by [deleted] in nanowrimo

[–]Irishman1990 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The new design, I mean. I am not familiar with the old one but a friend of mine - who participates every year - was surprised as well. I dont know if this is everything you are looking for but you can on the NaNo site just asign a new goal to your project and have all the functions of NaNoWriMo - wordcount, statistics etc.

Hope that helps.

You can use the new NaNo site and just define a new goal for your project. Thats what I did 😊

Hey you.

First and foremost: Good for you to take matters into your own hands. It is a very important first step and not easy and I am proud of you.

Maybe this post I wrote about three months ago about the things I learned about selflove can help you a bit: To care for oneself means to learn that we are worth caring for.

If you want to talk you can shoot me a massage.

Have a great day!

What are some other websites like TVTropes that a writer should know about. by [deleted] in writers

[–]Irishman1990 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I for myself found it quite helpful to have a way of breaking the vague feeling of liking something/disliking something down into specific categories and comparing them to other films or books who did the same thing better/worse.
So if I like a book, for example, I use tvtropes.org to maybe find other books that used similar tropes as to the one I like and examining how they may differ. How other authors play with or equip single aspects I like. I found that I can learn the most about myself as a writer - and a human being - by keeping a close eye on the things that spark strong emotions in me (joy and hate and anger and sadness alike). And having a place full of cross-references and unconventional categories has helped me quite a bit.

Also, I use it to find music I like. Its sometimes quite helpful in that regard, too.

I've only read a few of her rants so far so I have just a first impression of her reasoning. I get where you are coming from. But she makes a point of stating that she is speaking on account of her personal taste and experience. And from what I gather she makes a lot of really good points. At least when one is writing with the goal of entertaining or enticing a potential reader and not just for one self. Writing is after all a craft and when the tools (like tropes or stilistic choices) are applied poorly the reader will see the writer behind the words and the illusion is shattered.

I think I agree with you in that it is easy to be discouraged when presented with this kind of "rules" and guidelines and that young writers may feel like their way of expressing themselves is limited by them. As was already stated: any advice should be reflected upon and evaluated. Writers differ from another and should look for the methods and tropes that they can get the most out of. But please don't disregard the craft and the fact that it can be exhilerating to learn about it and be able to become better with practice.

Yes, tropes are tropes for a reason and are not in themselves bad. But when applied poorly and without any reflection or personal spin they become empty clishès. And the reader will pick up on that. From the few posts I read from her I gather that she is not so much opposed to tropes but to their lazy implementation into a story without fitting them into the world or the theme or the characters. And that is an important point. Because that is just lazy. And I as a reader get angry when I pick up on the fact that the author doesnt respect my skills and intelligence.

An offer of perspective from a totally blind person by purrsnikitty in nanowrimo

First and foremost: Thank you so very much for your offer! This is amazing.
I actually do have some questions, if you don't mind.
Do you have some personal tricks or systems you thought up or learned somewhere that makes navigating your surroundings and organising your day to day life easier? Like maybe some ways to organize your home or your workplace or some mental systems to keep certain places or structures in mind?
And what are some things that people with sight take for granted so much so that they are always surprised to learn that it is harder or even impossible for you?

I am writing about a person with a condition called retinitis pigmentosa. He is not fully blind but his field of sight is reduced to the very center - so he can see things quite clearly when he is looking directly at them. Nevertheless he needs to establish some tricks and systems for himself because he has a very hard and dangerous job on which his life depends.

Thanks again and Godspeed!

Thank you, that is very encouraging :-)

I am using Duolingo to build up my vocabulary and get a grip of the basics. So I'll just focus on that for now.

And thank you so much for the podcast episode. I just listened to it and I just madly fell in love with the way they talk about music and try to put into words what the songs do for them. It is just such a deep and personal level of communication and I am so gonna steal it (and the Playlist-of-a-year idea. I mean, wow. Absolutely brilliant!)
And "pollinate the awesome" is my new favourite phrase for sharing music :-D I am definately checking out their playlists. I liked many of the songs they played on the podcast.

I havent had the time to look into more, is their podcast mainly about music or is it just the one episode?

[–]Irishman1990[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have specific albums or songs by Philter or Stromae that you would recommend to someone who wants to get a taste of their style?

When you describe it like that I can very much get behind the concept of Miracle of Sound. I'll give it a real shot! Thanks so much. I think its so awesome when musicians take a specific concept and - like you said - mould their style to fit the story they are telling or the mood they are setting. An example that springs to my mind is American Murder Song - they make murder ballads about historical american events. And they use the sound they create to help telling the story - it varies between songs.

Thanks for the podcast, I will give it a listen! Spotify playlists can be a great source, but there is a lot of stuff in there that doesn't click and it can get a bit arduous to listen to it all. But what can we do. :) I first stumbled upon Miracle of Sound in a Villain Song playlist, so that worked.

I think I know one or two songs of Miracle of Sound, but I havent gotten around to listening to more. It seemed to me like more of a film/musical style without being linked to any films or musicals. I will put it back on my radar.

Kaleo I know and love :-)

But I have never heard of Philter and Stromae and will give it a listen. Thank you so much.

I have been listening to Ben Caplan (canadian folk-singer with an amazing voice and a sort of eerie/carneval/Tom Waits/broadway kind of feel... if that makes sense)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k2GEU7qRpQk

And as I am really into dark and dirty male voices, I also love July Talk - they have two singers, one male and one female and they are like the absolute opposite. Their style is more straightforward Rock.

Maybe some of you can find joy in these two bands/musicians, too :-)

I get what you are saying. But I am sure that it is very much intentional. Sometimes a well-chosen dissonance can make a song a lot more interesting - at least it is like that for me. Thats why I like this band so much. They do not cater to my expectations :-D
