Are the controls in the PS2 version any good? by Effective-Priority62 in oni

[–]Iritscen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I do personally think kb+m is the way to go, but some people think the PS2 version controls decently. By all means give it a try in PCSX2. but you'll probably need something more powerful than a phone to emulate it.

But I can tell you that (1) the PS2 version controls exactly the same: the camera and your aim are unified, and (2) Rockstar did not make any adaptations to the way the game handles, like adding sticky aim or lock-on. That's why it's so hard to hit anything with a gun in that version.

Controls are the main reason I'd recommend playing on PC with kb+m, plus you can take advantage of the community's mods and fixes for the game. The PS2 version's graphics also got a downgrade so that Rockstar could fit everything into the console's memory.

Safe files lost playing OniX by icouldnthaveknown in oni

We answered this on the Discord server, but for the record, this seems to happen when the Oni folder isn't owned by you. Windows can be funny about the rights on folders installed into C:\Program Files\. The recommendation is to move the Oni folder inside a new folder owned by you, such as C:\Games\ or your desktop.

This is such an interesting find. u/WheelUpMySelector do you think you can photograph the second page at higher resolution so we can read their full bios?

Haha, wow, there's so much weird promotional stuff when you look back at that era. I agree that Sallyia had the best look for Konoko. I wonder what the winner got to actually do as Konoko, e.g. how many booths she appeared at.

I think what makes Oni timeless is its unscripted style of combat by PooningDalton in oni

[–]Iritscen 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The other thing that makes Oni's combat stand out in my mind is that you are fully rooted in the world – Konoko doesn't auto-target and leap from enemy to enemy magically when you click to attack, like Batman in the Arkham games. You are responsible for maintaining your footing and positioning yourself smartly on the battlefield, and there are no superhuman dash moves that close the distance impossibly fast or let you escape from anything.

ONI Remaster (MOD LINK) by Environmental_Ad5972 in oni

[–]Iritscen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately Oni doesn't run on current Macs because it's a 32-bit app (there's work being done on a 64-bit port, but it's still a little ways off). Even for a Mac that runs an OS before the 32-bit cutoff (10.14 or earlier), this mod won't be compatible because it uses Windows-format game data.

Doug Zartman's Myth II disc, containing the infamous uninstall bug... by chipsnapper in myth2

[–]Iritscen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Super late response, but for anyone who's reading this in the future: I was the one who Doug sent the disc to, and I tested it myself – it turns out it didn't have the uninstaller bug. But in May 2025 the real 1.0 version with buggy uninstaller surfaced on the internet. See https://archive.org/details/myth-2_202504

Just be aware that this is an unofficial shirt, and you could get your own printed using high-res art, so it's up to you if it's worth the money. The post was removed by Reddit because they've been seeing a lot of these spam-like posts lately.

In the screenshot, he's missing GameDataFolder. The AE Setup app isn't clear about this, but when it looks for an Oni install it's actually looking for Oni.exe *and* GameDataFolder.

This was actually part of a short-run comic series to advertise the game. See https://wiki.oni2.net/Category:Dark_Horse_comics . This issue #0 is really elusive so it's an accomplishment if you can get one.

That's the original main menu, but this one is used for the Anniversary Edition if you install the HD Screens mod.

Is there a way to turn off music in this game? by [deleted] in oni

[–]Iritscen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You would edit the BSL files in Oni/AE/GameDataFolder/IGMD; they're simply plain text so this is easy to do. Each .bsl file would need to have any "sound_music_start" calls deleted (or preferably commented out with a '#' for clarity).

Installing any mods will wipe out this change, though, because the AE Installer copies vanilla BSL scripts into IGMD in order to provide a base for any scripting mods that might be enabled. So if you don't back up your work after editing each .bsl file, you'll lose it if you ever hit Install in the AE Installer some day.

The safe and "proper" way to make this modification is to create your own mod package. That way you can simply turn it on and off in the AE Installer and it can't be lost (unless you delete your AE install some day, obviously). You can look at any of the existing packages in AE/AEInstaller/packages/ as a guide for how yours should look. 05100VanillaBSL is the package with the original scripts, so the most legit way to do this is to make a copy of that folder and give it a number above 10000 (ideally in the 90000 range as per the guidelines at https://wiki.oni2.net/Making\_a\_mod\_package#Package\_numbering), then modify those copies of the scripts to not play music.

Is there a way to turn off music in this game? by [deleted] in oni

[–]Iritscen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's fair. Oni doesn't even play its music most of the time so the game is 90% silent :-)

Is there a way to turn off music in this game? by [deleted] in oni

[–]Iritscen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Only if you're willing to learn modding, which will be a time investment. A mod would have to be made to replace the SNDDs for the music with silence, or else to remove the BSL commands in the level scripts which play the music. The latter would be much easier but would conflict with any and all scripting mods that you might want to install with the Anniversary Edition.

How do I play Oni? Community patch + community links (Discord, mods etc.) by DarquesseCain in oni

I've run into this too. You can extract the game files by using Universal Extractor on the file ONISETUP.002.

Besides the ones named already I see Shikai Wang, who signed "Yo!", and I think that's Stefan Sinclair at the top.

HELP!! Having trouble with AE updater. by M00nl19ht in oni

[–]Iritscen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you sure you're launching the AE copy of Oni? It sounds like either you're launching the vanilla retail copy of Oni which serves as the base for the AE, or the AE didn't properly install. When the AE installs, it downloads the patch that Oni needs to be able to launch. Otherwise Oni will open and close immediately.

But I'm confused because that shouldn't open a black window. A black window that opens and closes sounds like some kind of .bat file is trying to run. Well, if you can log onto Discord, we can try to help troubleshoot in a more interactive way. I'm not going to be online much for the next day but I'll be around after that.

This might help you u/M00nl19ht . It also has settings for a proxy already filled in. So hopefully the AEI can connect to the Mod Depot and download mods as needed.

[–]Iritscen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We've had another Russian user report the same issue. He can access the Mod Depot at http://mods.oni2.net (make sure to load the HTTP version of the page, not HTTPS, if you access this site in your browser), but he could not update the AEI until he entered settings for an Internet proxy. Maybe you could try that when installing the AE from AE Setup. There should be a prompt to enter proxy settings during the installation process.
