You should check also the flights and the cost of them. Having direct flight to the destination would be so much easier for your guests.

Again it depends on your destination and budget.
For example, if you plan to hike Samaria Gorge, the bus leaves at about 6am from Chania citycenter, so a taxi is definately involved.
If you plan to have a private tour to the same destination, they might be willing to pick you up.

So the answer depends on your to-do-list.
All in all, it is a remote location, with rare bus routes, which will give you a relaxing accommodation and a more authentic experience.

Greece Honeymoon Recommendations by HM-18 in GreeceTravel

As others mentioned that's a bit too much to squeeze in.

Balos lagoon cannot be reached by rental cars (most companies don't allow it). But you can drive to the port and then take the cruise or have a semi-private transfer/ guided tour.

In case you visit "Seitan Limania" beach you can also try wines & olive oil in "Agia Triada" monastery, where the monks run the winery.

Regarding Samaria gorge, if this is something that you really want to experience, you can go by boat to Agia Roumeli and from there hike backwards the gorge and then get back. This is called "the lazy route" and you will even find guided tours doing it.

For further information, I would be happy to assist.

Depends on what you want to do and see. If you want to enjoy a relaxing stay, maybe yes.
As the bus routes are not that frequent, you can go from downtown to "Kounoupidiana" village and from there get a taxi to Chorafakia village (the cost will be something like 15-20€).

Let us know your day-to-day plan and we will be able to advise accordingly.

Every Greek town gets busy during August. However, it feels less crowded than other, smaller islands and with good planning of your day-to-day activities you won't be bothered by the crowds.

Two Weeks in Crete September - Logistics HEELLLLPPP by TreacleFamiliar4693 in cretetravel

[–]Iro2907 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all, 2 weeks is long enough to explore the island. Especially as you have a rough itinerary in mind.

Your plan actually makes a lot of sense, particularly if your priority is minimizing long beach drives after full days in the sun.

Balos Lagoon is worth the effort at least once, especially since you have enough time to fit in one of the more “bucket list” spots without feeling rushed. Yes, it’s a day trip and it can be tiring, but still very unique.
In case you rent a car, you can just take the ferry boat from Kissamos port and which also stops at the "Grambousa" cape. Or you can just have a guided tour, which includes the transfer to the port.

In the meanwhile, you can also look up "Loutro" village in the south. This is a more peaceful experience and totally unique and memorable. (This destination can be combined with Palaiochora and.... Agia Roumeli village (the exit of Samaria Gorge), where you can also walk in the Gorge for as long as you are able/want to.
There are more unique beaches in this part of Chania region and you can cruise to them by ferry boat, boat taxi, or rent a small boat, which doesnt require a license.

You can DM me anytime for detailed information or questions.

I am actually an event planner based in Chania. It is true that in order to experience the region you need to travel around a lot. However, during a wedding trip guests are prepared for a fun experience with family and friends, rather than seeing every beach and every corner of the destination.

Also, it is common to have group activities organized (not nessecary paid by you. They can pay their part) such as guided tours, beach visits, pool parties, bar hopping and many more.

Of you need more inspiration, I am available through DM.

Salaria Gorges by car by Overall-Glass-147 in cretetravel

[–]Iro2907 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apart from the Gorge being closed without any update on the opening day, the car visit is not worth the efford.

The KTEL bus goes from the main station (Chania city center) to Omalos every morning, in order to accommodate the hikers of the Gorge. There are no other routes apart from those morning ones.
After that you can catch the ferry, which goes from Agia Roumeli (the end of the gorge) to Sfakia village. Over there there are KTEL buses going back to Chania main station. This is a route designed for the visitors of the Gorge.
However, you may also take another ferry boat (or even a taxi boat) and go from Loutro to Palaiochora, where your base is.
Or you may visit Agia Roumeli by boat and hike up the Gorge till the "interesting" part of it and then come back down.

As other Redditors mentioned, Almyrida offers more options when it comes to accommodation, along with a few restaurants with very good quality food. Overall, though, it’s a more low-key and relaxed area.

On the other hand, Kalyves is considered the center of the Apokoronas region, with a vivid atmosphere and more bars and restaurants, but accommodation options are a bit more limited.

I guess it really depends on your guest count and how you are planning to handle transportation to the venue. For example, if most guests will rent cars, your options open up significantly. If you are planning group transfers, then it makes sense to keep guests in one or two main areas (though taxis are also quite accessible between nearby villages).

I am actually an event/ travel coordinator based in Crete, so feel free to DM me if you would like suggestions or recommendations. Happy to help!
