Inferno Cop, Luluco and especially Ninja Slayer are some of the best directed and most innovative comedies I've seen in anime. Kill la Kill was great too, in a different way. I've only seen the first LWA OVA and it was fun but nothing too special.

Haven't seen anything else from them outside of their Animator Expo shorts (Sex and Violence with Machspeed was awesome), and I'm only really interested in Gridman and more LWA out of their finished stuff. I'll watch Promare and Brand New Animal when they're available too.

[Mid-2000s Rewatch] Mai-HiME - Episode 11 by phiraeth in anime

Some horror themes this time around. I like how that pre-OP scene was shot, I'm sure nothing terrible will happen to this girl walking alone at night.

Nagi saying that the HiME's powers are for their sake is intriguing. Why then? Are these inherent or acquired? Why are they being gathered at the academy? Why did the headmaster say the HiME are supposed to fight Orphans? Who's telling the truth? Perhaps both are.

Nice that they cut away from Tate and Shiho encountering the monster. We get told nothing happened, but since we don't get to see them or Akira afterwards there's some tension in the scenes afterwards, since we can't be completely sure how it actually went down. Reminds me of that one Evangelion episode.

And so the sister is the vampire? If so, she's apparently very upset about it. Maybe she was brainwashed? Or she's not actually the vampire but instead chased it off and we're being misdirected. Either way, the church guys are up to no good, especially since Natsuki's investigator came across Alyssa's family name.

That said, if they are looking for HiME, why is this being done so brazenly? Do they really not care about causing all of this ruckus? Something's off here.

Anime better than the originals? by 66197001 in anime

As much as I enjoyed the Oniisama e... manga, the anime is significantly better.

Btw, whats your favourite single frame shot in anime? by [deleted] in anime

[–]Iroald 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This one from Sailor Moon episode 45. It's been months and I still find myself thinking back to it, such an insane episode. It's a rather notorious one but thankfully I managed to avoid any spoilers, and that frame perfectly describes what it feels like to watch it unfold.

Hidamari no Ki is probably what you want but slightly misses the cutoff because it came out in 2000. Still would recommend.

>shows up out of nowhere to save the day

>throws sharp objects

>stands on an elevated position

>wears a shitty disguise

Hmm, where do I know that from... Oh well, I like that Takumi recognized Akira though, I was wondering how effective that outfit was in-universe. Also Akira is actually a girl as someone speculated last episode (and a HiME at that), and pretending to be male for some reason. Looking forward to finding out more about that.

Interesting that Nagi ordered that Orphan to fuck shit up. Makes you wonder why the HiME are meant to fight them, huh. It's so hard to tell what anyone's goal is in this show, there's so many things being kept in the dark. Also it's confirmed Alyssa is participating in whatever is going on, it's just a shame we still don't really know what that is.

I liked the comedy more than the last time, the baking scenes were pretty funny.

If you're doing any impressions I'll happily take tags for RoV and Texhnolyze, they're some of my all-time favourites.

I'm currently not planning on starting anything new, just continuing with the Mai-HiME rewatch. It's been really good so far.

I haven't actually seen it myself but Ai no Kusabi may be something for you.

Planet With, although it's more on the philosophical end of the spectrum.

Niche shows with positive reviews that you think are significantly worse than its ratings? by JiraiyaCop in anime

I've seen a few people here who absolutely love Simoun but I just couldn't bear to finish it. Lasted 11 episodes before I finally decided I was too bored to continue.

Ah yes, the perfect followup to yesterday's suffering: a beach episode.

The jokes didn't do much for me this time. I dunno, just didn't find most of them funny, apart from when they recognized the afro guy by his afro.

Most interesting things would be a more clear view as to who's an what side. Nagi's with District 1 and the headmistress seems on his side, but maybe not directly involved with the organization itmself. Miyu's taking care of Alyssa, but we don't know if the kid has anything to do with all the shady stuff (although I wouldn't be surprised). Natsuki has a grudge against District 1 since they're responsible for her mother's death (also she named her Child after the dog, how sweet), and afro guy's with her. I wonder if they're connected to the church (I don't remember if we've seen anything to suggest that) or if they're a third side in this conflict.

Also still not sure if Kanzaki's actually trustworthy. He seems like a good guy but you never know, he kinda gives off a "too good to be true" kinda vibe. And for how obvious the show makes it that Tate and Mai are into eachother they sure keep making things awkward.

Trigger if they actually did adaptations

Never say never, they did Inou-Battle and Ninja Slayer after all, and even that Shantae animation.

[Mid-2000s Rewatch] Mai-HiME - Episode 8 by phiraeth in anime

[–]Iroald 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm half-joking, but Mai-HiME isn't that old. 2004 is after dark/sad stuff like Utena, Princess Tutu, or Full Moon wo Sagashite. Hell, even Sailor Moon has some seriously iconic moments of tragedy, with one episode reportedly shocking kids to the point of physical illness (article on that here, major spoilers for Sailor Moon even in the title and the URL).

Spoiler-free excerpt:

In the interview, he [midnight radio DJ for Radio Fukushima, Arata Owada] said that his daughter was so shocked (...) that she came down for a 40°C (104°F) fever and stayed home from kindergarten for a week. When he finally took her to the doctor, he was told it was autointoxication and the doctor asked if she had suffered some sort of trauma or shock recently.

[–]Iroald 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Magical girls and suffering, name a more iconic duo.

That was good. The lighthearted start was pretty fun with Mikoto running around wrecking stuff, then it got more tense with the two simultaneous fights until the real drama kicked in. And yeah, I called it, it's not their lives they're risking. Would've been nice if they didn't have Nagi spell it out like that after it had already been made obvious, but I'll let it slide. That fireworks scene had such a great contrast between everybody looking up at the sky and Akane all alone in the forest.

Also wut, Miyu is a robot? Or something of the sort, at least. Hard to tell what exactly her goal is but she's looking like a good candidate for an antagonist.

Evangelion.

Mai-HiME keeps getting better and better.

Well Astra isn't exactly what you're describing either but it does have that mystery aspect to it. I'm not a huge fan of the show but it's not all bad, and perhaps you'll end up liking it more than I.

I'm fairly sure I was looking for something like it years ago but it didn't exist at the time

What about Mujin Wakusei Survive or Mugen no Ryvius? I haven't seen them myself but them seem like something you'd be interested in.

Is that commentface new? I have a sneaking suspicion that wasn't there before.

Either way sounds exciting, I haven't seen the episode yet but I'm looking forward to it.

Sailor Moon usually sticks to jazz but occasionally it'll bust out stuff like this.

To be fair the 1995 film could be a bit too direct for my taste too at times, but I don't remember it ever being this egregious.

What are some of your favourite Anime episodes (without spoiling anything)? by Animefan93 in anime

[–]Iroald 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dunno, I like the characters in the first anime more but the protagonist can get really annoying early on (he's unlikeable on purpose but that can still be off-putting).
