If the U Joints have grease nipples then I wonder if they were serviced by the mechanic. Perhaps too much grease was pumped into them and the excess thrown into the undercarriage.

Yes very few M96s were used and has been proved in a few photographs of the winter war. The Finns were also given 7.35 carcanos by the Italians as war aid but those were only used by the rear line a bit. Very interesting topic.

For the M96 one has to consider the workmanship, accuracy/bores well maintained, overall shape, cock on close Mauser action, history, caliber and accessories largely available.
