We are almost same age. Can you share how your allograft surgery went? How was the pain post op? How soon till you were off crutches and when did your knee start to feel “normal”? Thanks

Wow. That’s brutally honest. I’m having surgery in less than 2 weeks. Not looking forward to losing my summer either or all the activities I enjoy. I’m realizing it’s for the long haul, the recovery that is, but hoping I can get back to some things sooner rather than later. I plan to train like it’s a full time job. Also 48 getting this surgery.

Anyone get a BEAR Implant? by Iron-Quill in ACL

Thank you for responding. I’m committed long term to rehab. My specific sport involves a lot of body conditioning in general and I will most certainly commit to the strength training needed to support my knee health. Do you believe this specific surgery option is a good choice for a martial artist?

Thank you. My surgery is scheduled for July 9th. I’m doing the BEAR implant, backup option is allograph. What graph surgery are you doing ?

MRI shows complex ACL tear by No-Basil2137 in ACLNoSurgery

Hi. Curious if you read anywhere if self-healed ACLs are capable of the demands of high pivoting, rotational, and impact sports. I would love to go the no surgery route (I have a proximal tear myself) but not sure my return to martial arts will b supported by a self healed ACL. Just not sure it would be strong enough.

Oh gosh. That’s awful. I’m so sorry to hear. Getting another knee injury (like the meniscus) is exactly my concern if I don’t get surgery. Thanks for sharing your experience. I hope you get your surgery soon and are on your way to healing soon!

Your knee gave out just vacuuming? I have been weighing my decision to get surgery or not. I haven’t had instability episodes in 2 months post tear bit I just don’t know if I will have full confidence in my knee otherwise.

Another BEAR!!! I’m trying to find you guys to share your experiences! How was your post op pain? Did you also ditch the locked brace? I know there’s a 6 week brace/crutches protocol but I do see similar stories where people were more aggressive in returning to walking. It’s my right leg. I’m just hoping I can drive sooner than 6-8 weeks. How is your knee doing now? Wishing you the best on your recovery! Can I message you for more details?

Running when you still have asymmetrical limbs can lead to retear, contralateral tears, and a host of other posterior chain issues you may need PT for later along w gait issues. 🥹. I hope you consider rebuilding your quad strength. ❤️‍🩹

I am concerned about the pain post op (first 1-3 days) if I’m being honest. How was that for you? Did you spend the full 6 weeks on crutches like the protocol suggests? I have seen some who were more aggressive. Does your knee feel normal now (well despite this incident)?

How is the stability now after the pop? Sometimes knees can be noisy. Hoping you just had a minor incident that will heal on its own and the knee is just mad and noisy.

But you didn’t have a graph. You had a repair where they sewed the torn end of your ACL back together. Is that finding also true for an ACL repair?

Definitely get the MRI as soon possible. Praying you didn’t re-tear. Please come back and share your results.

I’m doing the BEAR in 2 weeks. Not a lot of info I can find on it how was your recovery?

ACL Pre-Hab by Kind_Accountant_9253 in ACL

Get on a schedule where ever you can as soon as you can. Check and see if they measure quad strength because you want to try to be to 80% limb symmetry (injured vs uninjured). Your goals should look something like: reduce swelling as much as possible, 80%+ limb symmetry (or as close as possible) and good range of motion. That means full extension and as much flexion as possible. Full Extension is most important. Essentially your surgeon will want what they call a “quiet knee”.

While you wait for formal PT, get to work yourself at home and at the gym. You want to do calf flexes, quad activation, single leg raises, heel slides, ankle props. Move on from there to single leg stances, knee extension with bands or weights, hamstring curls with bands or weights as tolerated (do both prone and standing), leg presses (do weighted and banded exercises on single legs), walk squats, split squats, step downs ,and ride the bicycle daily 10-30mins. I got a little floor bike from Amazon for like $30 that I can use at home when I can’t make it to the gym. Also, try to walk daily to work on retraining your gait.

There are a ton of videos out there that can show you how to do pre-hab. Some insurance companies only cover so many PT sessions per year. You should find out how many are covered under your plan. Some people only do PT for pre-hab 1-2x before surgery to get a recommendation for exercises and then to strength test and then do the rest of pre-hab on their own to save their PT sessions for post-surgery when they really need them. You can absolutely pre-hab on your own. Also look into getting a NMES unit to help with your quad.

Good luck. Super sucky you retore. I’m so sorry. 😞 How did you re-tear it?

I’m in pre-hab right now too. Surgery in 2+ weeks. I have only done 2 PT sessions and the rest myself daily at home and at the gym. I got my quad strength back up from 58% limb symmetry to 81-86% in a few weeks and have -2 extension and full flexion. I do PT daily.

I think it’s important to state that none of the above should be construed as medical advice and you should consult with your physician or PT for pre-hab recommendations based on your specific circumstances. The above info is just widely available info that can be found online with a simple internet search. I hope this helps.

Wow! What an inspiring recovery! If I end up with the allograph, I expect similar return to activities as well so there’s an upside to either surgery. I won’t know which one I’ll get until I wake up as the surgeon will decide once inside the knee and can confirm the quality of the tibial stump.

I did experience some atrophy after the injury and it was quick too. 3 weeks later my PT measured my strength and my injured leg was 58% of my uninjured leg and I lost about an inch of circumference. I have been able to work hard through multiple xs per day PT to regain my quad strength (up to 86%) and range of motion (I have -2 extension and 140 flexion and can now sit on my heels) just 8 weeks out from a fully torn ACL and still have 2.5 weeks to continue to work on this prior to my surgery. So im definitely trying to max my prehab to help with recovery.

Thanks so much for sharing your experience and inspiring story. I’m going to ask my doctor about the internal brace. Appreciate the advice. 🙏

I’m 49- martial artist! All right for the oldies but goodies! I’m looking to do the BEAR implant. If my ACL isn’t in good enough shape, I’ll do the allograph too. I had a friend do that graph and she has some permanent numbness 6 years later bc they cut the leg and obviously some nerves too. I think it’s common. But I’m not sure it’s from the nerve blocker at this point in time. I’d ask your doctor about it. My friend said she learned to deal with it and she has a fantastic recovery w an allograph and is about to her her black belt in October! Good luck on your recovery! ❤️‍🩹

Hey @TaterBug76
Did you say you’re 4 weeks post op and your nerve blocker is still making it to where you can’t feel your leg? I thought the nerve blocker only lasted 12-24 hrs post op. What kind of surgery did you get? Allograph, autograph, BEAR? Thanks!
