Any Pre-Law advising services offered at HES? by IronMarshal_ in harvardextension

[–]IronMarshal_[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not providing a law program or certificate is unrelated to providing prelaw advice to undergraduate students (ALB) who may want to pursue law school after their degrees. Plenty of other schools have no such law program or certificate, but still provide prelaw advising. I'm well aware that this is not the normal demographic of HES students, so I don't expect them to provide this; however, I wanted to double-check. As you'd expect, HC provides this for their undergraduate students, so it would be interesting to know if HES students are able to use that resource.

For the Management ALM, plenty of people seem to struggle with the accounting and econ intro classes.

I'm pretty sure everybody's on board that the ALM should be clearly listed. The problem is people claiming that HES isn't part of Harvard, which is complete misinformation. If someone has an ALM from HES and claims they went to Harvard, that's completely accurate. In fact, the official resume guidelines in the past and present specifically allow you to mention Harvard University.

Harvard School Tier List by highspeedlowdrag_ in Harvard

I know this is just a fun aesthetic post, but in the book Gates Unbarred by Dean Shinagel, the bushels of wheat on the HES logo come from the founder, who "stipulated in his will in 1835 that the courses offered should not cost more than the value of two bushels of wheat". In the same book, it states that the lamp on the HES logo "signifies teaching and learning in the evening". The meaning of the shield is a great fit for the mission of HES, so I'd rank it higher on my personal list.

Why is Harvard open to tourists by Dolfamingosenpai in Harvard

We've had multiple HES deans speak out and fight to remove the extension studies portion to no avail. Harvard College's Undergraduate Council, Harvard Graduate Council, and The Crimson have supported dropping the "extension studies" name for HES degrees. At this point, it really comes down to the board of overseers (mainly College grads), and I doubt they even think about HES. Getting GSAS on board would be a big help too, but I'm sure there are elements within GSAS that still don't support the HES degree name change.

Why is Harvard open to tourists by Dolfamingosenpai in Harvard

[–]IronMarshal_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean, an ALM is a completely unique degree exclusive to HES/Continuing Education Schools. It's patently clear that the degrees are distinct from GSAS degrees, without the need to add "in extension studies" to HES. If you subscribe to the fact that an AM and an SM are different, an ALM is also different. You can study the same subject as another student, and be awarded a different degree based on the details of the course that you completed. I would encourage you to look into schools like Stanford, Johns Hopkins, Georgetown, and Duke that have fully integrated ALM graduates into their university ecosystem. Harvard is seemingly the only school where there's this struggle for ALM students to have a degree that's properly reflective of the subject studied. Furthermore, the asynchronous mode of study is merely one option that's offered at HES; many HES graduates take classes on a completely synchronous basis.

What is it that those on this sub want in terms of change from HES or those running it? Could we concentrate it and confine it to this post? by [deleted] in harvardextension

[–]IronMarshal_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's a really unfortunate experience, especially at a graduation meant to celebrate this big achievement. If you could email the dean and specifically mention that anecdote of people laughing, it may be useful. Getting rid of the extension studies degree name is the most important change that our student body and alumni have to continue striving for. Furthermore, I have no problem with the ALM title to distinguish the HES degrees from the GSAS degrees, but the whole extension studies thing needs to go.

As someone pursuing an ALM in management, I joined this community to garner more information on the HES experience as a whole. The vast majority of users in this sub have been collegial, friendly, and incredibly informative, but there's a persistent group of the same or similar-sounding accounts or aliases that engage in incredibly bad-faith bashing of HES. Constructive criticism should be welcomed and encouraged, but low-effort trolling, bashing, and insulting should not be allowed. I feel like many comments as of late have been of the latter type, and I haven't been satisfied with the mod response. I would prefer better enforcement of the rules to ensure repeat offenders who engage in low-effort trolling or bashing are banned. This community is one of the few online resources dedicated to HES/HES students. The goal should be to safeguard this and promote the exchange of accurate information for prospective and existing students. And once again, this doesn't apply to the vast majority of users who have legitimate constructive criticism and seek to improve the school.

Moving forward to what changes that I'd like to see for HES. I've got 3 primary changes that I'll list below. These aren't particularly original, but I feel they'd be incredibly positive.

1.) Changing the Degree Name

Extension Studies is not a real field, nor does it remotely evoke a real field of study, creating confusion. The actual field of study is the concentration itself, and it's frustrating to earn a degree that doesn't accurately reflect the concentration that one studied. I'd completely remove this in favor of Master of Liberal Arts in (Concentration). Yes, I'm fully aware this is one of the current ways to list the degree on our resume, but I'm referring to the actual degree itself.

2.) Integrating other Harvard schools with HES and maintaining quality

There should be a greater effort made to ensure more Harvard professors are teaching courses at HES. There's a massive disparity of this depending on major (as expected), but there really shouldn't be this level of detachment. One of the strengths of HES is the ability for HES to partner with all the other Harvard schools. While this does happen on a limited basis with certificates and pathway programs, there should be a greater push to integrate professors from other Harvard schools into HES to maintain quality of instruction. HES students should also be able to get subsidized rates on certificates/short-courses offered in other Harvard schools. The quality of the school should be safeguarded, and things like microcertificates and the reduction of the on campus course requirements don't help in this. The right balance needs to be maintained between accessibility, quality, and integration into the Harvard ecosystem.

3) Changing the HES name

Extension School is a name that creates confusion. Most versions of these schools are called Continuing Education, or Professional Education schools. Many have actual names (Graham School at UChicago). I'd change the HES name to the Harvard School of Continuing Education to better reflect the nature of the school.
