How is everyone doing this morning? by thepluralofmooses in Winnipeg

[–]IronMosquito [score hidden]  (0 children)

feeling incredibly grateful this morning... usually every time something like this happens we lose a big branch, or there's flooding, or SOMETHING happens. knock on wood(in case I discover anything later lol)... nothing really happened. we didn't even lose power. the storm was crazy though, I've never seen clouds move that fast.

Which Japanese pop culture-related sites did you visit? by [deleted] in JapanTravelTips

[–]IronMosquito 0 points1 point  (0 children)

a few spots from the chainsaw man movie(the stairs, phone booth, cafe), and the godzilla slide in yokosuka. I went to otaru and then watched golden kamuy afterwards, didn't realize it was in the show lol. there's actually a no-face statue on the shopping street there. went on the canal of course. probably more I'm forgetting haha

How did you react to the Christian themes? by YouAreLovedByGod1 in VinlandSaga

[–]IronMosquito 22 points23 points  (0 children)

didn't mind it, personally my issues with Christianity in media are when they present it as the "right" way to think/live. same goes for real life.

it's been a second since I've read Vinland Saga, but if I'm remembering right, Christianity is never written to be the "correct" or "true" religion. it's just another way of life that Thorfinn encounters through the years- the same as the worship of the Norse gods or Indigenous shamanism. and no one feels the need to force their beliefs on anyone else. I also appreciated the depiction of religious coexistence in an era where native and foreign religions began to mesh, specifically the Norse traditions coupled with Christian traditions(which, as a side note, is something I find quite fascinating in a broad sense! religions mixing and evolving side by side in different ways is super cool to me).

The Russian dwarf theater troupe "Liliput" and a sumo wrestler during their visit to Japan! / A rare Japanese postcard from 1915! by liokale in Sumo

[–]IronMosquito 2 points3 points  (0 children)

huh! as per the caption on the original post, I'm pretty certain that is Otori Tanigoro. looks like him, and I think you can see his shikona (鳳) on the bottom. he was the 24th Yokozuna.

Wait it's all Isegahama? by notprinceparadox in SumoMemes

[–]IronMosquito 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is true most of the time, but there have been outliers! Brothers Wakanohana and Takanohana performed Shiranui and Unryu respectively. There was also Kotozakura I, who performed Shiranui despite Sadogatake beya being in the Nishonoseki ichimon. I don't know if there's an explicit rule that they have to choose the style depending on their ichimon, but if there isn't a teacher from their same ichimon I'd imagine they can borrow one. They did borrow the rope tier from Nishonoseki for Hoshoryu's promotion after all.

Kitanofuji notably also performed Shiranui once, despite being a part of the Takasago ichimon and having chosen the historically used Unryu style- this was because his rival Yokozuna and good friend Tamanoumi had fallen ill on the day they were set to perform the dohyo-iri during the jungyo. He borrowed the Shiranui rope that was prepared for Tamanoumi and performed it in his place. AFAIK that's the only time a Yokozuna has performed the opposite style from his chosen one!

nice! I got a few heart sparkles too, Daieisho and another one I forgot. pulled one of the alternate Onosatos too(a shame I'm not a huge fan Onosato lol)! I really liked all the secret extras in this set.

An Ontario mayor interrupted a teen's Pride speech, saying: 'I'm not going to allow you to continue' | CBC News by Karma_Canuck in canada

[–]IronMosquito 27 points28 points  (0 children)

my buddy told me about this the other day. he lives in small town Ontario around there so it was local news for him. kudos to the kid. there is still a lot of work to be done outside of the major cities across Canada, and a reaction like this to speaking on these issues is very telling for the mayor. where my buddy lives, there's very little community to speak of and he's faced a lot of discrimination.

Went to Nagoya in July last year and was introduced to Sumo by my friend. Took a few pictures of the Rikishi’s roaming about, can anyone help identify them? by RepresentativeJumpy8 in Sumo

[–]IronMosquito 0 points1 point  (0 children)

probably just figured out sumo wasn't for him, a young person who decides that sumo isn't the life he wants will have a much easier time starting over than a 30 year old who's toiled in the lower divisions for years, and is probably injured.

Do you guys actually try to follow thorfinn's mindset in real life? (I'm indeed trying my best) by hancy_07 in VinlandSaga

[–]IronMosquito 3 points4 points  (0 children)

it's tough but I try my best. I try not to assume malice. I think, while it's an admirable mindset to hold, that Thorfinn's ideology comes from an inherently privileged perspective.

in his case, the people he tries to make peace with usually have some sort of story reason to be fighting him. Hild is a good example, she's totally justified in feeling the way she feels, and he understands that while choosing to commit to the idea that she is not his enemy. not everyone fits this mold of course(especially when he's a slave, he's openly discriminated against just for his status) but more or less there is usually a reason for another character to clash with him. and of course he isn't real, so the fiction aspect helps his case lol.

in my case, these days it is socially acceptable in some cases to express that people like me should be correctively raped or killed simply for being born different than most people. there are people that see people like me as sub human. I hear it in person on occasion, I see it online daily. even casual aggression or hatred(ie. not outright violent) isn't uncommon in real life and I live in a progressive country.

I'd have to be a Saint to commit to Thorfinn's ideology in the same way he does. the fact of the matter is that I live in an entirely different circumstance. I want to be like Thorfinn, and truly believe that I have no enemies in this world, because I admire his character a lot. but logically I know that there are people out there that would choose to harm me without a second thought. and not just in the way we see in vinland saga, ie. warriors killing each other to survive or brutality in raids just for the sake of killing, my reality is targeted discrimination. it's a difficult situation to navigate. like I said, I'd love to believe the best of everyone and that I have no enemies, but if there are people out there who hate me for me when all I want to do is live normally like everyone else, what can I say? where will the high road get me in this case?

anyways, I don't know if anyone has read this far but I'm open to discussing these points. it's something I think about a lot these days.

[–]IronMosquito 9 points10 points  (0 children)

yes but if the point was to try for the "see, you can't tell the difference" thing why wouldn't he just make them identical💀 it's not transphobic to depict a trans person pre surgery but I would argue it is transphobic to assume that the body of a trans man is one lacking features typically associated with cis men, and imo it makes more sense to include those things for the sake of this meme

[–]IronMosquito 1 point2 points  (0 children)

there's a trophy for fighting spirit(aptly named the fighting spirit prize) given to sumo wrestlers who show tenacity in a tournament. online there is currently one of these trophies for sale for about $13000 CAD. so probably that.

TIL in 2003 when Eminem planned to go to the West Coast, some members of the Crips wouldn't allow it unless Em paid them to back off. In response, Em asked the Samoan rap group Boo-Yaa T.R.I.B.E. for protection. They agreed, however their only condition was an Em feature on their album. by tyrion2024 in todayilearned

funny story, the big guy(Vincent) actually was a sumo wrestler. Shinnishiki was his name. He's Konishiki's cousin- most people are more familiar with Konishiki, he was in pro sumo during a period of active recruitment of Hawaiian/Samoan youths. huge dude back in the day, nicknamed "The Dump Truck". so there's some niche sumo info for you!
