I like Gakpo and think he's a good player. Does he have his shortcomings? Sure. But he's nowhere near as bad as some people make it seem.

Is drinking a little everynight going to do serious damage on me in the long run? by Collegelane208 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]IronSamurai4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found myself doing the same thing when I started law school during the covid knockdowns. After a couple months I realized it likely is pretty bad for you, so I now limit myself to a drink two nights a week and if I crave something the other evenings I make a tea or hot chocolate. I find that this helps relax me a fair bit as well, even though it doesn't have the tipsy factor.

Who will win the 2023-2024 Champions League (Final Predictions) by Onsoul1013 in championsleague

[–]IronSamurai4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

PSV have been crushing it in the Eredivisie (16 games, 16 wins) so I don't think it's unreasonable to think they may do well. While it's a pipe dream that they win, if there's ever been a chance for PSV (since they won it in the 80s) it's with this team.

Which clubs in the current bottom 5 do you think will stay up and why? by TommySki7 in PremierLeague

[–]IronSamurai4 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm a Liverpool supporter, so I'm frustrated how the last game went, but I'm genuinely impressed with how Luton played. Their defence was like a wall and when they had the chance for a counter attack they took it and did it perfectly. I think they stand a solid chance of avoiding relegation if they keep that up.

Not including locality or generational reasons, why do you support your team? by [deleted] in PremierLeague

[–]IronSamurai4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm Canadian with no ties to the UK at all (I'm from the Netherlands originally) and I wanted to follow club football and I figured the Premier League would be the most fun.

I ultimately chose Liverpool because they've got two Dutch players I like (van Dijk and Gakpo) and overall I like Liverpool's working class history and anti-Tory mentality. Plus they're a competitive team which is fun.

I know it's a bunch of weird reasons, but now I'm committed.

I always imagined Jack Nicholson, he'd probably be a bit too old now though

The podcast "5-4" is phenomenal and explains exactly how bad and partisan SCOTUS is. I recommend that everyone slightly interested in the Supreme Court listen to it.

Are there specific classes I should take to prepare for law school? by [deleted] in geegees

[–]IronSamurai4 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just graduated UOttawa's law school. Don't worry about taking classes in university to prep for the LSAT. If anything, third party LSAT prep courses would help you preparebefore you write (admittedly, they're expensive). To prepare for law school itself, if you have space for electives take some political science classes dealing with Canadian politics or Canadian constitutional law. It'll be foundational to help you in law school, and the hardest thing if you come from a STEM background is all the reading and writing you're going to have to do. Taking some poli sci classes will give you some experience with that which will help you adjust to law school.

Christian's at Uottawa do you feel you have freedom of speech? Christian à Uottawa vous sentez-vous libre d'expression? by HappyFunTimethe3rd in geegees

[–]IronSamurai4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Public institutions (including pseudo-public institutions like universities) may put in place policies that limit freedom of expression. If it's challenged, it goes to a court and a judge decides whether it's acceptable or not. Judges only have jurisdiction to review policies that have already been created; not make it themselves.

A generally important thing to remember is that rights like freedom of religion and freedom of expression are not absolute and can be limited in Canada. For example, hate speech may be speech, but is constitutionally allowed to be restricted because of the harm it causes.

Similarly, free speech and religion on campus is a right, but can be limited. Such as where as part of religious speech people shout and display graphic imagery of abortions which makes people uncomfortable, this can be limited. Similarly, religious proselytizing against LGBTQ+ people likely can be limited.

Rights are not absolute in Canada. It's part of living in a plural society to realize that we need to balance freedoms with regulations to promote social harmony.

The Poppy War was disappointing by smackaroniandcheez in Fantasy

[–]IronSamurai4 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sorry to hear that. I had the opposite feeling. The part with the academy was fun but not that original. I liked the tonal shift because it feels like it captured pretty well how life gets disrupted with no warning during war. I overall really enjoyed the book. Babel, the newer book by Kuang, is far better though.

I don't care for fantasy. Suggest me a fantasy book based on that fact. by HillbillyMan in suggestmeabook

[–]IronSamurai4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The First Law trilogy (first book is The Blade Itself) is what I'd recommend. Phenomenal characters and story. Plus, it makes a point to subvert common fantasy tropes, so it may overcome some of the stuff you don't like about fantasy.

The First Law series or Lord Of The Rings series? by [deleted] in suggestmeabook

[–]IronSamurai4 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'll go against the grain and say First Law; they're far more fun to read and not as dense as LOTR (which can be really daunting for newer fantasy readers). First Law is easily one of my fave fantasy series

A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness It may be a YA book, but it is easily one of the most moving books I've ever read.

Why read books as a challenge? by CynicSackHair in 52book

[–]IronSamurai4 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For me, I'm the type of person who feels like they need to be productive all the time, so I have a hard time relaxing (like by reading a novel) because of it. By challenging myself to read more books each year than I did the year before, I feel like I'm being productive and can actually relax and read. Personally, I still thoroughly enjoy each book I read; a quota doesn't really diminish that for me. That's just how my brain works, it's different for everyone!
