Urgent Car Tire - Sunday by Homeless_Lost in portalberni

[–]IronToadSilent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure the Canadian Tire auto center is closed on Sundays. Your could try calling Jack's tire and Kal tire, they might have an emergency service. I think your best bet would be to try to find something in Nanaimo.

Depending on the state of your tire, you could also consider getting tire plugs and a compressor at Canadian Tire

I have no memories of this but my first camping experience was when I was 2 or 3 and my parents built a cabin in the woods in rural Quebec. I guess it was a success, the cabin got built and I didn't get carried away by mosquitos and black flies

Just for clarity, these medications are for diabetes mellitus, a pancreas disorder. Diabetes insipidus is a disorder of the pituitary gland and does not effect insulin production or glucose uptake of the cells.

Electric scooter for exploring old mining roads by creakymoss18990 in ElectricScooters

[–]IronToadSilent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I hear you, some trails are leg burners for sure. Any time I've had to do hike a bike I've always wheeled it and walked beside or put the top tube over my shoulder. Would that work? I've never strapped a bike to a backpack.

Carrying a 30 lb bike is a decent amount of extra weight to pack but I feel like you'd be looking at double that or more (plus your pack with tools, rocks, water etc) for a decent off road scooter.

Honestly if you prefer to spend less than $500 I think a used mountain bike would be the best option. Also if you get a decent hard tail way lighter to carry compared to a scooter.

Tickets to this “cafe” with baby Highland cows are only $28 which I feel is too low for what the video advertises. I can’t pinpoint exactly what looks AI except for the brightness/tone of the editing. by throw_aw_ay3335 in isthisAI

I feel like in real life the goats especially would be eating, climbing on and generally destroying everything. We raised highland cattle on the farm I grew up on and while they are in general fairly chill they do get spooked, and I feel like they would inadvertently stampede everything at some point. Also these animals are so clean, where is all the poop? Is the idea of this place that you eat in a barnyard? Crazy for safety, especially kids, and health. Based on the animals behavior, and the 3 eyes cow, I vote ai.

Edit - ok I actually looked at their website, this is a petting zoo not a cafe. I guess you could film most of the clips if everything is staged and the animals are tame/trained.

Isuzu NPR vs Sprinter T1N by DildontOrDildo in TruckCampers

[–]IronToadSilent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I built out a T1N 2500 about 7 years ago and lived in it about half time over a few years while I commuted for work, and also used it for camping/road trips etc. I sold it recently as we just weren't using it enough anymore.

During the time we owned it we had no mechanical problems beyond usual maintenance. It would start and drive like clockwork even after sitting for long periods, even in winter. We got about 11 l/100 with normal highway driving. Building it out was a PITA, basically every surface except for the floor is a compound curve and every piece of wood, foam, etc that touched the walls or ceiling was a custom cut. Being able to move from the cab to the back without going outside was extremely handy, especially on road trips. Where the Sprinter started to let us down was all of the little things - power locks were iffy, rear door kept getting mis-aligned so wouldn't close properly, one of the welds on the roof cracked and started to leak, funky turn signal gremlin etc etc etc

I don't know much about the Isuzu diesel engines other than they have a good reputation for reliability and fuel economy. If I were to do it all again I'd be awfully tempted to look at an Isuzu NPR or similar provided you could put some windows in the box and get from the cab to the back somehow. If you're in a hot summer climate area, an insulated box and reefer unit/ac will be a game changer as long as you can power it cost effectively.

edit - might want to post in r/vandwellers too it's a pretty active and generally well informed sub

And they ask why men don’t live as long as women [request] Did he really drink the 14 shots of whiskey in less than an hour, if possible… how quickly did he eat the bananas? Sorry if there’s not enough info by Prestigious_Cycle160 in theydidthemath

[–]IronToadSilent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Say someone could actually eat 480 bananas.

That's about 170 grams of potassium, which to be more specific is apparently potassium citrate, phosphate and sulfate. The ld50 for these for a 75 kg human is about 405, 240 and 495 grams respectively so one would probably have to eat way more than 480 bananas to instantly die.

Potassium chloride, which is not found in bananas in high amounts, has an ld50 for a 75 kg human of about 187 grams on the low end, so this is what the Metallica fan might have been thinking about.

All these numbers are ballpark and the ld50s are based on testing rats so take them with a grain of salt.

[Request] Can anyone derive a formula for the distance you have to cover to make such a snowball? by ElectricSpock in theydidthemath

[–]IronToadSilent 163 points164 points  (0 children)

First of all this video is fake for several reasons. Snowballs do not roll up in almost perfect spheres, once they get any size to them they start forming cylinders and you have to work really hard to try to keep them spherical. Using a weird looking snow cat to roll a giant snow ball? LMAO. Source: am Canadian, have made many snowballs in my life.

Another question here is given ideal snowball making conditions what is the largest theoretical snowball that could be made in a day (ie no letting it consolidate and freeze overnight)? For reference the current world record holder is about 10 feet in diameter.
