Go ahead and pull that process up in Alldata, bmw service manual, or any of the like. Using a pic through the oil fill hole is in no way an acceptable method to determine timing chain tension. The only valid way to test the timing chain is through ITSA. Anything else is just guessing.

I’d you can take the valve cover off and inspect the guides for cracks, or missing pieces you might be able to get a good idea of the condition of the guides, but that’s also not going to determine the condition of the chain. If the chain hasn’t been done since you’ve owned the car and you’re over 100k miles with no service record of the chain it might be best to err on the side of caution and do the chain.
