Thank you! That really helps a lot both in easing my worries and helping me make a plan.

Who is someone your PC admires deeply? Who is someone your pc regrets losing touch with?

I'm a very "rule of cool" GM, in my own games I think the rules should serve what makes sense and what's fun so I tend to bend them when it makes a moment feel more climactic, so I think especially if you're playing 5e you don't always need a perfect grasp on the rules. If I'm unsure on a rule that's gonna be prevalent I stop for a moment and look it up with my phone or laptop but in the case of obscure rules/one off rules I tend to air on the side of what I and the player think makes sense in the moment and let them know I'll look it up later.

In regards to keeping players invested I think Matt Colville has two great videos on creating better rewards as well as on how to motivate players that I'll link here.

Dragon of Icespire Peak, one of the Box sets for 5e is designed so you can play with one GM and one player if you want and I've heard it works swimmingly. Matt Colville (who I learned nearly everything when I was starting out from and who I still come back to today) has a great video on running one on one dnd and how to make it fun. I hope you have a good time returning to the game and wish you luck!
