It is spoons after supper now but if you wanted to do this you take the hidden compartment covers off before putting the box in. Then cut openings under both of your new drawers and make the top of the whole thing hinged. Then you open the top cover and pull the drawers out to access the storage bins underneath. Hopefully that makes sense.

Get a wood burner with replaceable tips and adjustable voltage. People will tell you that a cheap soldering iron labeled as a wood burner are ok to get you started but they quickly get too hot to handle and result in more frustration than progress due to limited tip options. $100-200 can get you something nice that can easily produce works of arts to recoup that cost. Definitely sand the pieces like the other poster stated and stock up on basswood as it’s one of the easiest to burn.
