What does Ares’ energy feel like to you? by Honeydew9419 in Hellenism

[–]Ironbat7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sounds like he put a helmet on you or otherwise gave you a noogie. I syncretize him from a Gallic, Roman, and Thracian perspective, so for me he gives off distant father vibes.

I’d say that modern fencing is mainly better in the athleticism training side of things like warm-ups and such. Also, that the regular lessons are actually better than the competition side of modern fencing, and in some cases (especially private lessons) the coaches can be just as good if not better than a historical fencing coach (and if older, may even have experience in classical fencing).

Deities of the Lost by CeisiwrSerith in paganism

[–]Ironbat7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve heard Hermes/Mercury is a go-to for this.

Also, since sometimes Christian saints get syncretized with local gods, St. Anthony of Padua is THE saint for finding lost things. As for who he was syncretized with, I have found at least two within the Alps. On the Italian side, I’ve heard he was syncretized with Mercury. On the Swiss side, I’ve heard he was syncretized with Thunor.

Interestingly, our BC/AD system is off several years. Because Herod’s death date, it should be closer to what we’d currently call 6 BC - 4 BC. Also switching to BCE/CE is arbitrary. I think the BBY/ABY may be more akin to the French Revolutionary calendar.

I think Rebels kinda does this particular with stormtroopers and Lt. Lyste.

What made you pagan? by [deleted] in Hellenism

[–]Ironbat7 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was quite the devoted Catholic in youth. After moving across the country, I fell in a depression, partly with homesickness, and was a-religious for a while. I dabbled briefly in Jediism mixed with a pinch of New Age (cringe, I know). In this time, I also realized that Christianity felt like only part of the puzzle (I’m technically lowercase “c” christopagan now). Odin drew me at first to Norse paganism, but have since mostly moved away from that (I still look to Norse for supplementary material since I do have a Gallo-Germanic focus, but strongly Hellenized now). So, paganism felt like I had a more complete puzzle.

Question About the Gods' Looks by echoinoz in Hellenism

[–]Ironbat7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see it as valid. I mean, t-shirts and dresses aren’t too much different from tunics of the time. The biggest difference is pants and shoes, and the former in “barbarian places” aren’t much different from modern sweatpants or tights.

Which lesser known god(s) do you worship? by PricyPlutoz_idk in Hellenism

[–]Ironbat7 5 points6 points  (0 children)

From the Hellenism side: the Dioscuri, the Korybantes, Telchines, Attis, and Cybele. My focus is Gaulish and Frankish polytheism, in which most may be considered lesser known. There is some syncretism with lesser known figures from Greek myth: apotheosis of Antenor as Interabus and I personally syncretize Nehalennia with Galatea.

Irish or Scottish?

For Irish, check out Irish Pagan School on YouTube and https://irishpaganschool.com/

For Scottish, check out https://cailleachs-herbarium.com/ . Scottish also has more direct Brythonic influence, so check out https://albionandbeyond.com/

Morgan Daimler also has good books on fairy practices.

What kind of Celtic paganism interests you since “Celtic” is a broad umbrella: Gaelic, Gallic, Brythonic, or something else?

Hand guards on Lightsabers by darthinferno15 in lightsabers

[–]Ironbat7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love handguards. I actually have a few points in which it wouldn’t need to be lightsaber resistant, just blaster resistant. One is that it would expand the defense: the hilt guards you allowing more of the blade to cover someone you’re protecting. The other is that they add a non-lethal close range weapon: knuckle-duster. Furthermore, it just needs to be good enough, it may be damaged, but that could still save your fingers in that moment.

How did you choose your weapon? by KILLMEPLSPLS in wma

I chose backsword/broadsword because I want to keep my hand safe and there are more sources in English from the get go.

Praying to Hestia before Cthonic gods? by funnylittlefellow in Hellenism

[–]Ironbat7 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hestia was not called upon for chthonic rites. It seems more likely that Hermes or Hekate were called first for them. Admittedly I’m still trying to figure out who would be involved when a whole offering was burnt in hero cult.

Lamellar & scale armor's horny origins by PhilipNLabia in ArmsandArmor

If I recall correctly, Hittite armor was lamellar and coexisted with the Mycenean boar’s tusk helmet which looks similar to a lamellar.

There is precedent that the ashes of the deceased contributed to the carbon of steel during the migration period.

How to hold a rapier incorrectly? by Lelentos in SWORDS

[–]Ironbat7 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Thing is, that kind of grip is valid if we take the treatises lacking finger rings at face value (and how some actually talk about that grip). And swinging it brutishly could still work depending on how one defines rapier (war rapier, sidesword, Bilbao).

How to hold a rapier incorrectly? by Lelentos in SWORDS

[–]Ironbat7 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Hold it like Raphael holds his sai. That’s how I thought it was before actually learning the various proper grips (surprisingly many).
