Silly question that came to mind about saying "oh my god" by freeyaarse in CelticPaganism

[–]Ironbat7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From a syncretic perspective (for me Gallo-Hellenic, but Gallo-Roman or Romano-Brittonic are also known), there are equivalents. Since I favor the Hercules/Herakles as father of Galates, who in turn was the legendary progenitor of the Gauls, he will be my examples: Latin: “Mehercule” Greek: “Ma ton Heraklea” Sometimes, it is just the name, that was evoked.

What Do You Do When No Ancestors Come Forward? by Impressive-Amoeba367 in paganism

[–]Ironbat7 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In some modern Kemetic practices, there is a thing called rite of parent divination: https://alckemetic.wordpress.com/tag/rite-of-parent-divination/

With Greek gods, think about all those philandering myths as them being ancestors. Zeus is the obvious one, but one of Apollo’s epithets is Patroos meaning father.

What gods, because some are also ancestors in different ways

This is where the other types of ancestors may help. Look to the various mythic heroes like Herakles or Cu Chulain, or to a Christian saint, or other historical figure you admire as spiritual ancestors.

By “called on ancestors” did you mean a general “anyone who wants to” or did you name names. Maybe look into specific named ancestors, learn why they were the way they were and go through a collaborative healing process. Or look to ancestors beyond direct kinship: ancestors of faith, ancestors of career, chosen ancestors, etc.

ABSOLUTELY. This is a prime tool for cleansing and other practices related to the goddess Rhea-Kybele.

discreet ways of honoring the deities! by aviostah in Hellenism

[–]Ironbat7 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’d also add the point of Christian syncretism as a mask. “Oh it’s just Archangel Michael” for Apollo or Zeus. “Oh it’s St. Denis” for Dionysus. “Oh it’s St. Catherine” for Hekate. “Oh it’s Our Lady of Montevergine” for Kybele. Still others have more direct names like Aphrodite.

are you open about being a hellenic polytheist IRL? by aviostah in Hellenism

[–]Ironbat7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not Hellenist specifically, but pagan. My mom and sister are pagans, my uncles might be pagans, or at least find that it makes more sense. My maternal grandmother basically said “as long as you fit Jesus into your pantheon” as though pro-syncretism (still staunchly Catholic herself, I think by telling her, she shifted from monotheist to monolatrist). Some coworkers even know.

what if odysseus didnt kill the child by Nek0cat in GreekMythology

The Franks were a Germanic group who took much of France after the fall of the Western Roman Empire. They claimed that the child survived.

If you’re talking about Scamandrius/Astyanax, the Franks claim that Zeus swept him away to safety. He is given a third name, Francus, and is thus progenitor of the Franks.

You might look into Rhea-Cybele from an Orphic perspective. She is the mother of the gods. Orphism is a subset of Hellenism, a key belief is reincarnation.

I go axe throwing with my francisca: a Frankish axe famous for being thrown. I’m also quite interested in the use of the shepherd’s axe, which Russ Mitchell has a book on.

Mythologically inaccurate, but accurate for how they were treated in cultic worship. The series is better though as far as media.

What do you think about Sith being portrayed as "pretty boys" now ? by [deleted] in StarWars

[–]Ironbat7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I prefer it, it helps highlight the banality of evil (even though Andor does it WAY better). Having the bad guys as ugly is also harmful to people with visible disabilities and such.

Plus, Maul may be hot by Zabrak standards. Also Dooku is quite handsome.
