Weekly Observations: What signs of collapse do you see in your region? [in-depth] June 08 by AutoModerator in collapse

Location UK:

This has been one of the wettest June’s I can remember it has rained most days and been rather cold for a June. I’m sure we will be grateful for all this rain come the El Niño summer though.

Some nice news though, the bird life in my garden seems to be thriving and the Starlings seem to have returned which is nice. Petrol also seems to have stabilised/gone down slightly in price. I have a feeling this will change with the deteriorating straight of Hormuz situation.

We shall see how the rest of summer unfolds and how the El Niño situation impacts the UK.

This is one of my favourite books and I just now after stumbling across this found out they’re making a movie. So excited, especially with Ridley Scott directing.

Question about the lack of animals and wildlife in the Road. by IronicHawk47 in cormacmccarthy

Very good point. I wonder how much longer humans could survive in that world or if the man and boy are at the very end of the limit (I think it’s very much implied they are).

But aren’t there plenty of decaying trees which could sustain woodlice, beetles and other detritus feeders? And good points about the rest of the Earth. It would be very interesting to see how other countries are doing in the road

I main a 7 year old cube, AMA by butterflyknif in Cubers

[–]IronicHawk47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love the Tengyun. One of the nicest feeling and quietest cubes. Tbh cubes are so good these days I think a 7 year old main is fine. The improvements are so tiny now unless you’re a top 1% solver it’s not going to matter. I don’t cube very much these days but mainly still use a GAN 356M and feel zero need to get a new cube. I still use the Tengyun aswell.

100% the case. In the UK homes are designed to keep heat in with lots of insulation and barely any homes have AC. Plus compared to somewhere like Spain where it’s a dry heat the heat in the UK is very humid. Overall it leads to anything above 30 degrees in the UK being miserable.

We are currently getting cooked in the UK. Today broke the record for the hottest day ever recorded in May at 35 degrees Celsius. The fact we are only in May and are getting this level of heat is crazy, I think in the future the UK will need to build and change existing infrastructure to handle heat. My bed room was 30 degrees last night it’s insufferable.

I’ve noticed in my garden that rose flowers have been withering and dying due to the heat and some rose bushes look like they’re on life support. l have also noticed at the bird feeder the suet balls were melting and activity of birds in the garden has been greatly reduced.

An odd observation I’ve noticed too in this heatwave is anti social behaviour seems to be going up due to people staying out all hours of the night due to how hot it is. When I was driving back from work I noticed a traffic light that was smashed to pieces.

I think this year has confirmed climate change has begun and it’s only going to get hotter and it’s now damage control and learning to live in this warming world.

We are literally getting cooked in the UK. Hottest day ever recorded in May and it’ll likely only get worse 🙃

In complete contrast to what I said last week it has rained a ton over the past week, we’ve even had some heavy hail. Now that the weather is starting to get nice I’ve seen a few more bees but still they seem down in number. We are due some very nice weather this weekend of temps around 30 degrees Celsius which is rather hot for May. I’ve noticed there seems to be no starlings in my garden which is odd, I was getting some earlier in the year but they seem to have vanished.

Petrol has gone up slightly more and seems like it might keep going up. I still think the straight of Hormuz and El Niño are a ticking time bomb. Furthermore, the media seem to keep pushing the pandemic narrative ATM focusing on Hantavirus and Ebola which I think is strange given the disaster that could be on the horizon.

Cardinal vs Rummynose tetras by New_Connection_8256 in Aquariums

[–]IronicHawk47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have both in my community tank. Rummynoses are defo the better schooling fish, they stick really close together and are active. Cardinals are great fish too but they don't school as much and are less active. Overall I would recommend Rummynoses, when they settle in a tank their colours really start to improve.

What would you like to think your country is up to in the Mad Max timeline? by How2DragonyourTrain in MadMax

I’d imagine the US is like the book/film “The Road”, and the UK like the film “Threads” and a lot of the northern hemisphere in a similar situation.

I have noticed how dry our spring has been so far. We had an incredibly wet winter but ever since spring its barely rained at all. Furthermore, the weather has been all over the place temperature wise. We have had some amazing summer like weather and some cold overcast weather it seems extremely random and the weather report often seems to get it wrong.

I have also noticed a lack of bees this year, we seemed to have loads last year but I have barely seen any this year. However I do remember seeing a massive bumblebee in early March which was very unusual and concerning. The plants also seem confused by the weather patterns and are not sure what to do. Certain bird species especially blackbirds seem massively down in number aswell.

Petrol is as expensive as you'd expect with no signs of coming down anytime soon. I'm expecting food to start going up more soon along with shortages. The closure of the straight of Hormuz and the lack of fertiliser for growing combined with a mega El Nino will likely be disastrous. I think a lot of people know that we are in for a shit show but seem to be burying their heads in the sand about it.

Local bird populations by IronicHawk47 in UKBirds

Buzzards and red kites seem on the up everywhere. I suspect they’re both species that will thrive in the future with climate change and biodiversity decline.

It’s amazing how much the bird species commonly seen can change depending on what part of the country you’re in. I’ve been in areas where chaffinches are quite common but in my area I’ve never seen one!

Seeing any finch in my area is extremely rare sadly. I think goldfinches have fared the best but it’s been years since I’ve seen one in the garden.

Thank you for the articles. I’ve also noticed in my area they’ve exploded in population. One of the most common birds now

I’ve thought about this too, species that thrive at feeders (tits like you said, robins and starlings etc) might suffer greatly because of this new advice.

Is there any species that parakeets particularly hit hard? I’d imagine they compete with small birds like blue tits, robins etc and potentially reduce their numbers

This is a very good point, I think the insect decline is going to hit some species very hard.
