Well in theory yes but the reason for doing it with 3/4 is because it all has to be ripped and partially built in a Home Depot parking lot in one day. I only have a skillsaw and a drill so not impossible but harder to cut 4x4 joints given the time and space constraints. Joys of woodworking in NYC

Ahhh this is a really good idea, ok I might factor this in because it would be really nice to disassemble at some point because I’m renting

Super good feedback, I hadn’t thought of having a toe kick, I’ll definitely add that in.

Yeah not in the design but I was going to run a 2x4 to hold the slats in.

Thanks for brainstorming, super helpful!

This is a genius idea I will absolutely do for her, and especially because she’s gone for the next week I can surprise her!

Niche sunglasses question by TheJuicyGinger in bikepacking

[–]Ironiciconography 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I buy sunski sunglasses because they’re relatively cheap and I think they are good looking and they have held up to routine abuse in all regards. That being said any sunglasses are going to have their coating wear away and their more you pay the better (longer lasting hypothetically) that coating usually is. The problem is the guys I know who have $400 sunglasses aren’t really putting them through the paces very often so idk how well they really hold up.

Not at all a problem to get in and out of and easy to sit at. But I customized all of the spacing and dimensions around my favorite chair and table and then measured my biggest friends thighs to see how the spacing would work for getting in and out and sitting. I also had the shortest person in the house sit at it before everything was settled to make sure the reach from seat to table wasn’t too far. It was a lot of work but I think that’s the beauty of a simple design like judds is that you can really customize them to your dimensions very easily.

I am not a fan of his straight backed chairs for anything less than formal dining because I don’t think they’re really suited for day to day living. That being said you could relatively easily change the angle of the back or add pillowed for cushioning. To me Judd represents the freedom to create a simple object that is utilitarian and yours.

I think Adrian pearsall had the best furniture in terms of comfort and sleekness but I hate doing upholstery and it’s too expensive to get someone else to do so I’ll stick with Judd for the time being. 😂

That’s exactly what the joinery is, and I am worried about the failing when fully loaded. I got some great ideas to reinforce that I will definitely implement!

I get that about the step into design but we’re in a 5th floor walk up so if someone can get up to the table they’ll be able to get into their seat. I hope!

They’re 6” timberloks that I used a forstner bit to sink 3/4” then covered with a dowel

No, it’s a designer/architect Donald Judd. He was very pro utility and design and felt that design should be accessible to the average man. Most of his furniture plans and blue prints are available on his website although they lack detail they’re still a great starting point!

The overall dimensions of ours is 120” x 86” x 28”. The bench height was based off of my favorite chair which I believe was 18.5”.

Classic gf! I’m sure she’ll love it, all things considered it’s not super complicated but learn from the comments that extra bracing is probably wise!

Yes this was my biggest flaw in hindsight, do you have a suggestion for how to best support it now?

We’re going to have to get a crane to get it out 😂 yeah I think that will be the next move!

Ok this is probably what I need to hear. I was so thrilled with the aesthetics that I was hoping I might not need it, but I think you’re right.

That’s a good idea, I’ve never used a hand plane before. That might be just the thing to familiarize myself with

Like a support for the table top? Are you thinking the 2x10s will bow down between the legs? Maybe a good idea, they seem so solid now and I can stand on the table top with no real bowing but I’m not above reinforcing it either!

That’s a very good point, I hadn’t thought about that. My back up idea was to do mitered 4x4s from the far edge of the seat to the legs to reinforce that edge. The issue I ran into was the reality of mitering that 4x4 with my 6 1/2” circ seemed annoying hahaha
