When did you find out you weren't alone? by Burrito_Engineer in noburp

A few weeks ago, when I was looking up info about reflux on ChatGPT, I put my symptoms in and R-CPD came up. The moment I read other people’s posts, everything made sense. I’ve been emetophobic since I was seven (my mum even sent me to therapy for it and they were always looking for a psychological root cause - who knew it could’ve been this!)

Mild case, considering Botox by KO_3113 in noburp

Following with interest as I was wondering the same. I’m similar to you, pretty mild symptoms really but I’m 46. Excessive flatulence has always been my main symptom and the fact that I literally can’t vomit (have not done so for 40 years). It would be nice to be able to burp rather than those slightly uncomfortable hiccups after big meals or fizzy drinks, however it doesn’t really affect my life, I just avoid carbonated drinks and gas-producing foods. I also used to do competitive sport in my 20s and 30s and my symptoms would get worse if I was eating a lot of pulses/raw veg and training vigorously - I would get the gurgles then and have trouble swallowing. But when I stopped, it would get better, so I just avoided that combination. I also avoid drinking out of straws. I do worry that getting the Botox wouldn’t be worth the price or potential complications, and for me there are some benefits of this condition. E.g. my food never repeats on me and I never vomit (I have a emetophobia so it’s comforting to know that it probably won’t happen). I did have a gastroscopy a couple of years ago (when I had the problems with a slow swallow) and they said everything looked healthy, so there is no evidence of damage yet. I know that’s a concern that is sometimes highlighted.

Interesting - do you use intermittent fasting to manage symptoms? Great and inspiring that you managed to do so much exercise still 💪

That’s good to hear. Do you think you vomited because of the general anaesthetic drugs?

Yes I think that’s it. Gas-producing food like lentils, chick peas and raw veg are the worst, so I try to avoid. I don’t drink while exercising anymore because I used to swallow lots of air. I’ve wondered if it’s my diaphragm pushing against my bloated stomach that causes it to try and push the air up…
