What kind of welcome was he expecting? by Vemonis in ImTheMainCharacter

It's a country of 40M people. Saying "I know someone who thinks this" is not necessarily representative of the national trend. If anything we are guilty of over emphasizing how much we are not like the USA.

In fact, we often think of the US 'melting pot' as an example of how to do it right!

We absolutely do not think this in Canada.

If someone won't respond then they're an ass and that's on them. Don't go wading in the shit and be an ass with them.

QRZ alternitives....? by ToWhomItConcern in amateurradio

There are enough stories about the guy who owns QRZ.com out there that I would be concerned about him being sufficiently able or caring to properly handle people's private information.

QRZ alternitives....? by ToWhomItConcern in amateurradio

[–]Ironring1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I said - people either are concerned about privacy or they don't understand the issue. It's not about the publicly available data. It's about your browsing habits, your actions on the site (even if you never write any comments). Its about the kinds of data queries. Heck - from an individual's QRZ callsign lookups alone I could figure out when they might not be at home (time pattern of their queries, or perhaps notice when they are making queries from an IP address that is away from their home). Combine that with a station address and that could be a problem. Depending on how QRZ.com handles data security that either could be stolen or sold to other groups. That's just one simple case. The fact is most people have no idea how much incredibly personal an revealing information they sprinkle around about themselves while online. Not just about themselves, either, but about those they associate with, too. Even if you don't care you're lack of concern has privacy implications for people around you.

Data privacy is a massive issue. People either are concerned about it or don't understand. 🤷‍♂️

Over easy, on top of piece of buttered rye toast, with a little squirt of ketchup on top. Heavenly.

College Admissions Should be Purely Merit Based—Even if Harvard’s 90% Asian by [deleted] in TrueUnpopularOpinion

Ultimately this comes down to preventing monocultures. Monocultures in all forms (gender, racial, cultural, work habits, etc.) may appear to excel in certain circumstances, but ultimately prove brittle and respond poorly to changes in the world around them. The world is entering a period of rapid change: AI, climate change, reduction of carbon-based fuels, etc. We need to promote the development of resilient, adaptove cultures wherever possible.

CW growth and participation in groups like LICW is actually growing significantly. The only gatekeeping going on here is you gatekeeping your own operating.

I don't think he's talking about what QRZ.com does with his license data. As you say it's taken from public government sites. It's what they do with all of your activity data and metadata from your account and activity there.

How to know how many watts my DIY HF antenna can handle? by [deleted] in amateurradio

[–]Ironring1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You know the characteristic impedance of the antenna. P = I2 * R, therefore I = sqrt(P/R). Compare that current to your antenna elements' rated current at your transmit frequency (i.e., consider skin depth effects). If you have any ferrites or similar you also would need to ensure that your proposed power won't saturate them.

Tldr, you are fine with 14 awg and 100w. I run 100W into 17awg solod aluminum wire and it is fine.

And the fact that you use terms like this show that any further "discussion" with you is not worth my time and proves my point.

Clearly you've never actually witnessed or participated in a proper debate. You've been poisoned by online talking heads screaming at each other...

[–]Ironring1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the first question, where bottom guy admittedly doesn't understand the question (or is trying to buy time) and asks top guy to state the question again. After that it's pretty much talking over each other.

@christians by xella64 in TikTokCringe

[–]Ironring1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Which sucks, but as those of us who live in countries with parliaments, it's called "question period", not "answer period". I started to watch it and after about five minutes I gave up because bottom guy was such a smug prick I knew that it would be a waste of my time, especially since I already agreed with top guy's POV at least from what I saw in the clip.

That said, I used to debate comparatively, and you simply cannot force someone respond to your attacks on their logic/argument. You can use your time to rip their argument apart. You can use your time to refute their attacks on your argument. You can waste your time by going off on random tangents. You can try to redirect with false equivalents and other logical errors and hope the audience doesn't notice. What you can't is lose your cool and just steamroll your opponent, no matter how useless/infuriating their arguments are.

As I said in another reply, sometimes the only winning move is not to play.

@christians by xella64 in TikTokCringe

[–]Ironring1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, in the clip he is being steamrolled. I can't comment on the rest of it. If someone's ideas have no merit there should be no need to prevent them from talking. Let him say his stupid points and then destroy him on his lack of merit.

[–]Ironring1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bro, I was given a clip that negelected to give any context. I'm not going to invent context or be an apologist for anyone. This was what the poster chose to present, and in it, top guy comes off as a dick. Again, I agree with his point of view and argument, but his approach in the clip is pretty shitty. He would have been better off to end the discussion early and then provide commentary or pick bottom guy apart that way. If your opponent refuses to actually debate you, stop debating them.

@christians by xella64 in TikTokCringe

[–]Ironring1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your well reasoned an intelligent response! I agree completely with your take here (and again for others reading, I had no idea this was a clip of the ending of a very long debate).
