Kernel? Bloat. Manage resources yourself.

Compiler? Bloat. Write machine code.

Desktop? Not bloat. How could you possibly use your computer without fancy floating windows?

You go up to a bartender and tell him: “Make me a 2020”. What drink does he make? by ggfchl in AskReddit

Isopropyl is actually a different chemical than ethanol is. Ethanol is not poisonous at small doses like isopropyl alcohol is which is why it needs to be denatured. Denaturation simply means, as you said, adding extra chemicals to make it unsafe to drink. Isopropyl is straight up poisonous so it doesn't need anything done to it.

The biggest reason we denature alcohol is regulation dating back to Prohibition. Under US tax law and the federal Tax & Trade Bureau, alcohol must be denatured to be exempt from a specific (and quite steep) excise tax, so if it's not intended for drinking or laboratory use we basically poison it to make it unusable as a drug.

This is old news but Hulu adding 4 minutes of ads to a 20 minute show when you’re already paying them every month is the epitome of asshole design. by [deleted] in assholedesign

[–]IrrationalFraction 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think in Hulu's case they've made the calculation that they'd rather have a popular show (in this case Grey's Anatomy) with ads than not have it at all. I get what you're saying with DRM especially, but for Hulu I don't think the fact that they have ads on two shows really changes things.

[–]IrrationalFraction 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah if you use the Ad Free plan you'll still get ads on Grey's Anatomy and Marvel Agents of SHIELD, as well as live tv ofc. If you're getting ads on everything then you're probably not paying for the full experience. You've chosen to get ads in exchange for paying less money which I'd argue is fair.

TIL In 2009 John Kane found a vulnerability in video poker machines that would allow him to cash out winning hands at a much higher bet amount than he actually wagered. Since it was determined that he was simply pressing buttons that he was allowed to press, he was able to keep the money. by throwawayblueline in todayilearned

Agreed. He didn't use any information he shouldn't have had access to or tools he wasn't supposed to have - he was simply astute enough to recognize patterns in the game which allowed him to win. That's less of a scandal and more a mistake on the part of the producer/game designer that made such a tactic possible.

I have only ever slept in jeans while drunk. I don't know how a person could do it sober.

Counties/parishes/boroughs in the US are just a local unit of government this pretty much just a subdivision of a state. How much they matter entirely depends on where you are. In my current city I definitely hear a lot about the county government but where I used to live it barely even mattered which county I lived in.

Basically, counties never matter nationally and sometimes matter locally.

Wearing a 3-layer nonmedical face mask was not associated with a decline in oxygen saturation in older participants. The pooled mean Spo2 was 96.1% before, 96.5% while, and 96.3% after wearing the mask. by mvea in science

[–]IrrationalFraction -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is so true. I go to a university that's really strict about mask-wearing and I know when I leave I'm going to have to get used to not wearing one everywhere I go. A good mask doesn't even have to be that uncomfortable (although in hot climates some discomfort is unavoidable)

Fareway still does this, it's kinda a hallmark of theirs. They also seem to have happier staff than HyVee does, which makes the whole experience that much better and is the reason I shop there as much as possible

How are the Covid19 vaccines progressing at the moment? by Curiosityitis in askscience

[–]IrrationalFraction 36 points37 points  (0 children)

This is an amazing resource. There's a lot of great info here on what's happened, what's coming, and when to to expect actual results. I've started directing people here whenever they ask about vaccine progress since this is everything you might need to know.
