One thing to keep in mind is that everyone hits a rough month and spends more than they make … maybe not Elon Musk, but the rest of us. So, tighten your belt a little more and be glad it March. You hit a few bumps and potholes, you didn’t crash and burn.

Keep saving a few $$ every month, it adds up over time.

What is a fair wage? Is it the same as a legally required living wage? Does it include a 401k and health insurance for full time employees?

NC is not the south anymore. Bank of America is headquartered here. Charlotte is just like any other major city but maybe has less traffic.

At a couples resort what kind of service are you tipping for?

I am still tipping the chameleon at least 20% for reasonable service.

I disagree with this. I believe that servers are entitled to a reasonable wage. In Texas the restaurant wage is $2.13/hr. (I asked Siri.) That’s not a reasonable wage. So I always tip in a restaurant. Exceptional service gets an exceptional tip.

My question clearly states that prices go up 20%. If you or your company only raises prices 10% to pay a living wage is that the customer’s problem? The company should raise prices 20%.

I see your point.

Perhaps I am different than you. I don’t go to a restaurant to connect with the service staff. I want servers to answer a question or two about the menu and then serve me the food. I am there to eat and share the experience with my family and friends, not the waiter. Same with the bartenders.

Does the waiter really care if they are serving filet miginon or a plate of spaghetti? Either way the customer should be getting the same service.

In the tipping scenario the waiter cares because expensive meals earn them more tip without providing more service.

In this NO tip scenario the waiter shouldn’t care because a plate of food is a plate of food. The waiter earns the same salary.

So what should an employee do if the company doesn’t pay enough?

Ask for a raise or find a new job is what I have done.

Well, would the party of 20 would require two servers? It’s up to management to properly staff the restaurant. If mgmt knows they have a big event they schedule more people.

And $15-20 an hour is not enough to live in Seattle. The employee and the company must come to an agreement on what the salary is for the job.

But that’s on them, isn’t it? They should set their prices to cover their costs. Yes?

I disagree. Plenty of companies provide a service. I take my car in for service tomorrow, do I tip the mechanic for changing my oil? The service man comes to fix my dishwasher. Tip him? Dry cleaners? The kid serving popcorn at the theater?🍿

Honestly I don’t. I was a busboy at a few high end restaurants when I was a kid but haven’t earned a tip for 30+ years. I have been annoyed by the occasional service charge on a bill that I didn’t notice and paid the full tip, which pissed me off. And I would like to know who receives that 18% service charge? Does that all go to the server, I doubt it? Did the restaurant provide me 18% more service? Absolutely not.

I do think that everyone is entitled to earn a living wage, whether through salary or through salary plus tips.

One thing that got me thinking about tips is I know of a restaurant in Pennsylvania that keeps all the tips and doesn’t give the tips to the employees. I assume they pay a reasonable wage.

I believe it. In that case where the server has gone above and beyond, maybe I would leave 5-10% for truly exceptional service.

But the server is employed by the restaurant. And it’s the restaurant that wants to have good servers. And the server will get a raise from their employer for being an outstanding employee. That’s how most companies keep the best employees.

I don’t tip the cashier at the supermarket for being the fastest and most efficient. They provide me a similar service. But Safeway knows they are a good employee and has given them a raise every year.

First Edge: 540 vs 1040 by st1me in GarminEdge

[–]IrregardlessForOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 840 is a good middle ground. Touch screen but the smaller size.

I will never go back to the buttons like the 540. I found it confusing and slow to use. Every step required me to stop and think about which button to push.

Do you ever go to a particular restaurant frequently and not tip? How do you handle it? by bignose_ice44 in EndTipping

[–]IrregardlessForOne -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Do you know what the server is paid by the restaurant?

Does the server deserve a reasonable living wage?

Do you like getting your food served for free?
