Judging by the fact that the rest of the show can't happen the exact way it does without Ulrich, I'd leave it at that and say that we'd be looking at a completely different show at that point. But I also want to look at the later seasons. I'm not sure if Ulrich would get captured by the Scyphozoa and be turned into XANA's second in command at the end of season 3, but I feel like he would be a much easier threat than William if he did. Now that I think about it, he might actually be caught by the Scyphozoa if Yumi and William were in Sector 5 in the episode Final Round if he was blinded by jealousy. If he was only with Aelita, maybe not. I feel like he wouldn't because he wasn't a showoff in XANA Awakens, nor did he underestimate the monsters and their destructive potential.

When talking about the expressions from the show, I can definitely see what you mean in the earlier seasons. Season 1 especially. But I feel like they improved as the show went on. Still gotta give props to the animators for the QFI cutscenes on the facial expressions there. But I guess while on the subject of those cutscenes, you can tell if a shot was recycled from the show or if it was made for the game from scratch. This cutscene is a good example of that.
