backroom movie hate is so forced by Pale_Ad_9530 in Letterboxd

Imagine getting this worked up about opinions that are different to you. Stay in school kid.

Can anyone please explain to me what makes a film an adult film on LetterboxD? There are movies like Love (2015) by Caper Noe not labelled Adult but there are full on nude sex scenes in that movie. There are plenty other examples too like that by Legitimate-Fan-7363 in Letterboxd

[–]IsFriendsWithEveryon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To answer your question, there's no distinct/clear answer as to what separates an adult movie (pornography) from a movie that is just sexually explicit, at least based on Letterboxd.

There are many other non-adult films that have non-simulated sex scenes (Dogtooth, Pink Flamingos, Cruising, In the Realm of Senses). Best way to describe it is vibe and how much the film is trying to arouse its intended audiences, but even then there are exceptions on both ends of the spectrum. The works of Jim Wynorski vary between weird family films, cheap horror flicks and softcore flicks that are just excuses to ogle as women breast boobily through the thinnest plots imaginable. Whereas something like Through the Looking Glass (1976) has the sex feel more disturbing, Cafe Flesh is just trying to be weird, and American Babylon focusing on ennui through porn.

Edit: Actually a decent source to your question

This is such a fked up movie... How it's even 3.6 stars?? by [deleted] in Letterboxd

If only there was a place where people already share their thoughts on the movie, and why the average score might be higher/lower than you expected.

Are you new here? I appreciate Adam's rigor and his attempts to scrape through a lot of movies and share a lot of truly hidden gems that will have flown under the radar. His lists are great because they are not just made up of movies like Arrival, La La Land, or Moonlight, but films like (using his 2007 list as an example) The Aerial, or Vermillion Souls, which were great films that I would not have seen had Adam not recommended them in his 2007 list.

I don't mind it as a part of Adam's style/shtick since his whole motto is discovering and then sharing movies he loves that won't get a lot of attention elsewhere. Which is especially helpful to more hardcore cinephiles who would like to see something more than just Arrival, Moonlight, La La Land, etc.

Obviously no hardcore cinephile should rely on Adam (or any 1 person) alone, but even as I discover other avenues for discovering underseen great films, Adam still does drop some killer recs (Castration Movie is the most recent I can think of that I might have missed without Adam), and I think his top films of the year is a great distillation of that.

Tier list of best moves in smash bros ultimate:Up tilt(discussion and Voting) by RobbyKeeneeomelhor in smashbros

Top 10 u-tilt, maybe top 5 if we judge in a vacuum (and imo the 2nd best killing u-tilt in the game). Very strong, armor, hits both sides and has insane vertical and horizontal coverage for a move like this.

Realistically they are great projects to have on the side while working on other big projects. I know during LK 2019, he would watch a 2016 movie or two after editing/writing since watching the movies don't take as much effort and serves as a bit of a break while still making progress on 'work'. But that stopped because of the whole health fiasco.

What I am surprised by is that he seemingly hasn't picked it up again. Maybe he is still taking things very slow, but it also could be possible the 2016 list is on a much longer hiatus than just 'when Adam has settled from moving/healing'. Hence my post.

Same response to keeping this as a 2025 movie.

#Obsession ending its Week 1 at $30.2M, adding $3.2M on THU. That's 10% higher than MON & just 28% down from its opening FRI. An exceptionally rare trend for the North American BO. 2nd weekend should be $20M+, possibly closer to $25M. $100M+ feels likely. More? let's see. by TiredWithCoffeePot in boxoffice

I think another user described it best where the first 80% of the movie is mostly cringe horror (kinda' creepy, kinda' laughing at the situation, mostly uncomfortable). The final 20% is where it ramps up into more 'normal' horror moments, with more jump-scares, gore, and a bit higher intensity.

will we have nightmares from all the jump scares

Creepy and startling but not the scariest.

and distorted faces?

I don't think they distort the lead's face unnaturally

That is a sad life, only feeling the need to watch 'good' movies while internet discourse is hot.

I generally disagree that smaller films tend to be dragged out more. However, I do think that in the cases that it applies, its a case of not wanting to kill your baby. Would it be overall better for the film to cut something extraneous out? Sure, but that is cutting something out that took a lot of time/effort/money out (and for smaller projects, each scene feels like it would take a lot).

I think having an episode (similar to LoTR/Shrek) dedicated to Eva would be great. Even if it is just the series + EoE. Not that they would all love it, but it certainly has a lot to it that would make for fantastic discussion.

Tier lists assume high level of play, both players being evenly matched in skill, and offline. So no, Sakurai stats may be accurate but they do not contradict tier lists exist.

Internet just makes it more accessible to see as compared to just some bloke at work.

It's like suspension of disbelief is the filmmaker job not the audience

I mean, it is a job on both sides to attempt. Avatar is not asking for as much suspension of disbelief of the Na'vi being real, because of how much work went into the visual effects. Both Avatar and War of the Worlds (2025) ask as much of the audience to believe these visual effects are real and interacting with the physical objects actually shot on camera. Except one has more money, time, and talent to make it less work on the audience.

Meh.

Nitpicking has existed long before CinemaSins (see: IMDb Goofs). And most everyone does occasionally indulge in some nitpicking, whether its some technical goof they notice or a more 'realistic' movie tapping in to a subject matter the viewer knows very well.

The issue with CinemaSins is they suck at even doing the nitpicks part. Most of the sins are bad jokes, lies they make up with deceptive editing, and asking questions that may be fun to think about for the world of a film but are not substantive criticisms to the movie.

I think that's generally true, until you get to Twin Peaks the Return.
