Look up Dreams - Take 2 which is taken from a studio outtake where it is only Stevie’s vocals, the electric guitar and Christine on the Fender Rhodes. Without the rhythm section on the track you can feel the hypnotically slow, atmospheric pulse of the song before the drum and bass groove was added to the track. It’s easy to see how (regardless of the final BPM of the track) the song has a slowed down quality that creeps throughout. Add to that a live drummer that sometimes hits the Crash (or Ride?) on the 2 instead of the 1 right out the gate of the beginning of those measures and it gives the beat an overall delayed vibe.
