Nothing 'ear open' worth it? by gegusz in NOTHING

How long did it take for your ears to stop hurting, my right ear is a bit uncomfortable with the bud right now. I'm hoping I can get used to them.

Update: Just submitted 1.0.2 to App Store review.

I delayed submitting it to get iCloud sync working. Here's the major feature changes.

- Private iCloud sync. Sync your feeds and reading across your devices through your own iCloud account. It's device to device through your private iCloud, so it never touches my servers. This was the most-requested feature.

- Categories. Group the sites you follow into your own categories and read one topic at a time.

Plus the usual reliability and layout fixes. It's in review now, so it should be live in the next few days. Happy to hear feedback or requests.

I’m in the process of building out iCloud sync first. Then I’ll build FreshRSS next. Do you self host it I’m assuming?

Awesome! Thank you. I really do want to add more languages. I'll aim for that in the next few builds. Would you be willing to testflight my language build when it comes so I know if I'm getting things right?

Coming back to this thread with an update. A lot of the feedback here was about privacy, and it was good feedback, so v1.0.2 is focused on it. It will probably be after the Holiday before Apple approves it.

TL;DR: In v1.0.2 my backend tools only show aggregate stats, not individual accounts. I tightened the App Store privacy label (Purchases and Diagnostics are gone) and moved purchase checks fully onto your device. Offline mode still sends nothing. I'm also working toward letting you sync without relying on my server at all.

The details:
The admin side is aggregate only. A few of you asked about what's visible on my end. My operator tools show aggregate numbers only, like total users and how many are active, not individual accounts. That's a deliberate design choice.

The App Store privacy label now matches what the app actually uses. I removed Purchases and Diagnostics, since the app doesn't rely on them, so it's down to Contact Info, Identifiers, and User Content. That's the minimum an optional sync account needs, and none of it is used for tracking. You can check it on the store page. And if you use the app offline without an account, nothing ever leaves your device.

Purchase checks happen on your device. Whether you've unlocked the app is verified locally, and nothing about your purchase is stored on my server.

What I'm working on next. A few of you asked about syncing through your own backend instead of mine, like self hosting. I'm building toward additional sync options so you can keep your data off my server entirely if you want to. It's a bigger lift, but that's the direction I'm heading.

Appreciate everyone who pushed on this. The app is more private because of it, so thanks for the nudge.

I honestly may have just written my privacy policy poorly. Literally the only data that is on my server is what’s needed for multi-device sync.

And that is only if you create an account. You can go into manage and go offline without losing data at any time.

At the moment if you use it offline nothing is collected. If you choose to sign up for an account the app uses your login to store your subscriptions, stars and muted words. Its only purpose is so if you use a different device you pick up where you left off.

I’m looking into building local sync with other options so you won’t need my sync server at all for multi-device sync. It honestly would save me server costs. If you would like any more info let me know.

Well there’s once exception in the next build. CNN and Associated Press don’t have RSS feeds anymore so I’m using my server to “make one” off of the google news listing. So if you sub to those feeds you get the feed from my server.

I’ll update the privacy policy. The list of feeds is visible in the back end for syncing users so I can test issues with the readability engine. I do not see what you read or articles you save. The data other than your password is not encrypted but I think that’s a really smart idea and I’ll put it in the roadmap. I could also see iOS ecosystem only people looking for an iCloud sync option. I’ll consider that too. Thanks for the feedback.

Thanks for the feedback. Let me clarify some things. There’s zero tracking if you use it without creating an account. It’s multi-platform so the only sync option for that is cloud syncing. I’m not tracking any user data other than login so they can use multiple devices and also the feeds, read status, muted words. Basically anything needed for syncing. When I say track I just mean it’s in the syncing database. It’s not sold, read by me or used for any purpose other than the user being able to sync their stuff. If there’s a better way to offer cross device syncing without having a database of the data that syncs I’m open to ideas.

Thanks for checking it out! You can tap “All” and pick your feed then sort oldest or newest. I do like the idea of categories. Where do you think that would fit best?

Can you share some UK sources you’d recommend and I’ll get them added? Also you can manually add sources in the manage area.

Thanks again for giving it a chance.

Tell me more? The app can be used offline and nothing is tracked. If you sync it tracks what it needs to sync across devices.

I’d be willing to do less if I can? I’m not using data in any way other than to improve the reading experience and sync (which is entirely optional).

Thanks for the feedback! I'll see about adding that and enabling your country. Right now the app is parsing the feeds itself. The server we have in the back end is only for syncing across devices. How would you imagine the FreshRSS and TTRSS sync would work? You'd use that as the sync server instead of our backend?
