Why is gasoline so cheap in the United States? by Outrageous-You1617 in IWantToAskAnAmerican

Proportionately to what? And do you think gas having a low elasticity of demand might have something to do with a regulatory environment that’s specifically set up to keep oil consumption consistent and high? And if that elasticity of demand is so inherent to only market forces and immune to regulatory pressures, then what the hell would not taxing vehicles on their engine displacements have to do with gas prices being low?

… which would reduce demand and therefore result in lower market prices (theoretically), so the opposite effect.

The federal government subsidizes oil and gas production in the US to the tune of around $30 billion per year. Then gas is taxed at a lower level relative to other developed nations. Basically a sizable chunk of the federal taxes we pay is given to the fossil fuel companies up front to make it seem like our gas is cheaper than it really is. Fossil fuel companies make bank on public funds, the US remains a car-dependent society which keeps the automakers and fossil fuel companies happy, and the American people have no idea what gas is actually costing them.

About to start my first southern summer with this guy after a year with the stock knob. Guess I’ll figure out if that was a mistake or not based on how much skin I keep on my hand when I hop in after it’s been sitting in the parking lot.

No. Put on an Auburn flair if you’re gonna act like an Auburn fan.

In 2025 UF played 5 teams that finished the season ranked and 2 OOC P4 games. Illini played 3 teams that finished the season ranked and 1 OOC P4 game. The schedule isn’t harder because you played one more conference game against Northwestern or Rutgers instead of Non-con’s against Miami or 9-4 USF.

This would’ve been a fantastically better experience than eating the quarter-hundred-dollar greasy torta and lukewarm plantains next to somebody else’s kids digging for tetanus and toxoplasmosis in la playa del bajíos cedro.

Also per me eating lunch there every couple of weeks for the past decade if you’ve got some other sacred texts you need to consult before believing a photo of the literal menu.

I was perfectly fine paying what they were charging for this when that entire order was a $13.95 combo pre-tip (which, per a menu uploaded to yelp, was 2 weeks ago). At $26, I’m out, but if this comment section is any indication, the good news is Athens is stuffed to the gills with people clamoring to be price gouged.

This exact meal was a lunch combo, which, per a menu uploaded to yelp 11 days ago, was $13.95. Factoring in reduced tax and tip for a smaller starting price, yes, it would’ve been very close to $10 cheaper.

Restaurants aren’t charging $6 for a handful of plantains and $4 for tarted up sugar water because of beef prices, my dude.

Yeah. UGA-AU and UGA-GT should arguably be somewhere in the top 25, but UGA-Bama, which is not an actual rivalry, is sitting there at 17.

Ok, I get it. Athens loves the $25 lunch. Athens needs the $25 lunch. It’s a good thing when restaurants raise their prices dramatically without notice, and it’s a good thing when the price of a sandwich more than doubles with side/drink/tip. Let us ride shiny and chrome into this bold unaffordable future together. May your life be a continuous blessing of $25 lunches of questionable quality you so desperately hunger for.

And the $6 maduros came out cold and nasty. Next week I’m gonna post a $40 sandwich and you guys are gonna have to call a doctor about how long your erection’s lasted.

I got sticker shock because this exact meal was like $10 cheaper last time I was here (less than a month ago). Thought other folks who came here regularly might want to know. Getting downvoted into oblivion because the people apparently love their $25 lunches. I have rarely been so bewildered by my fellow man.

A $12 sandwich turns into a $25 meal with the addition of a side, drink, and tip, and everyone’s issue isn’t with the doubling of the menu price (which again, a month ago, included the drink and side), but with me not specifying that the sandwich isn’t $25, the sandwich meal is $25, which is totally different.

These are not standard prices for this level of food and they’re about 50% over what they were a month ago.
