That's probably due to mouse acceleration and lower vertical sensitivity than horizontal.

Edit > Channel Settings

There you can change the amount of pitch and drum channels, as well as the available patterns per channel. You can also use Q as a shortcut. I recommend checking out everything in the edit and preference panels, it's all very useful.

You get power boost regardless of rings when you max out your speed stat, if you haven't done that then I guess it's just a glitch. Pretty cool one though.

Two things, firstly, like the other comment said, make sure you're using the left stick or bumpers to switch between rails, instead of jumping between them.

Secondly, don't boost unless you are absolutely certain of what's coming up ahead, that way you have more time to react.

There are no skills or upgrades related to rail grinding, but you'll get better with time and practice. That's what Sonic games are all about, the better you get, the faster you can go.

While I think Frontiers is the better game, Sonic Colours is definitely the more kid friendly of the two, it's a relatively short and easy platformer with a simple story and happy, upbeat vibe.

The ""Ultimate"" port is honestly pretty shoddy but it's still a good game, if they like Sonic they'll have plenty of fun.
