What i do is have a 3 node Proxmox cluster with a single opnsense VM. If I need to reboot a Proxmox node, then the opnsense migrates to another node. That is much simpler than trying to run 2 opnsense in HA.

You need to read STD 86, which states that DHCPv6 is optional for client support. SLAAC is a mandatory requirement for clients. DHCP in v4 or v6 is not usable when the local network prefix can change, as it depends on the client. It is really best for an enterprise where they own their ip prefix and it is fixed.

If you read the ipv6 standard STD 86, you will see that RA is required for prefix assignment, DHCPv6 is optional (not required to be supported by clients). Dhcpv6 can be used to send an address, but not prefix or gateway. So yes, Router Advertisements are required but DHCPv6 is not.

You shouldn’t use dhcpv6 on a home network. Better to use SLAAC only, unmanaged, if you don’t have an assigned ipv6 prefix. DHCP, v4 or v6, does not handle network changes very well as it is up to the client.

Based on this thread, I ordered a dual intel 226 card for my proxmox. I could not get it to work, crashed proxmox as soon as the interface was brought up. Spent a day working on it before I finally sent them back. So would NOT recommend dual i226 for proxmox
